Last week we sadly lost legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine inventor Ikutaro Kakehashi. An innovator who made an incredible contribution to modern music, and one fully deserving of a full Tracks Show tribute. 15 years ago the wondrous city of Liverpool bestowed an enormous honour upon one of its most famous sons: renaming their airport as 'Liverpool John Lennon'. March 8th is one of the most important dates in the Tracks calendar. It was the day in 2016 when we released our very first episode, “#001 - Hello”, and today we’re marking the occasion by dropping our 50th exactly a year later. A long road, a lot of laughs and a half century. What a beautiful thing. To celebrate such an occasion, the challenge was simple - we each had to give the other 3 musical anniversary gifts. 3 songs we knew the other wouldn’t have heard of. 3 songs we knew they’d love. As regular listeners will know, 1993 was a musical year befitting of the birth of our very own Harry. Many remarkable things happened in 1993. Bill Clinton was elected President. Whitney Houston spent nine weeks at number one. Tom Hanks won his first Oscar. Most important, however, was the birth of a little fella in Brighton, UK. Our very own Harry turned up, and this week we're celebrating his 24th birthday. It was the debut year for Tracks, and one we'll never forget. Throughout 2016, we met up every week and shared the music we love, had a beer or two and laughed our little socks off. The Tracks Awards 2016 draw to a close this week, with our album of the year nominees serving up a fitting finale.   For us, this was the most prestigious award we could possibly bestow, and therefore a huge amount of consideration went into the selection of our final 20 acts. From Kane Strang to Kanye West, The Avalanches to Thee Oh Sees, we scoured our 2016 libraries to find the most deserving winners and came out with a shortlist that encapsulates everything that was great about the music scene in 2016. But, ultimately, only one thing matters: who will win? Who's taking home that gleaming, glistening trophy? Tune in to find out.
