2016 is drawing to a close, and what a year it has been. So much amazing music has been released and so many incredible artists have shone. But forget the Grammys, the real recognition this work needs is here, and it's coming from The Tracks Awards.   All four of our episodes in December will be dedicated to paying tribute to our favourite releases this year, and this week we're focusing on three categories - best live performance, best album artwork and best newcomer. Who doesn't love a Sunday? Lay-ins, good food and great company. In many ways it's the best day of the week.   Well, this we spent last Sunday evening in the studio discussing the perfect music to end the week with, just for you, and came up with some absolute bangers. We're not going to lie to you, this episode is a bit of a ramble. Last Thursday Whitney, one of our favourite bands of 2016, touched down in Brighton to play a headline slot at The Haunt. This week marks 5 years since Manchester legends The Stone Roses announced they were returning from a 15 year hiatus. It was a moment of massive excitement for us as fans of the band, and we decided to mark the anniversary with an episode all about the comeback. As is usually the case, we picked three songs each on our theme, and this week our shouts were pretty huge (even if we do say so ourselves). Blur, Sleater-Kinney, Pulp, De La Soul, The Libertines and Mink Muscle Creek all receive praise in an episode bursting with huge tunes. What a week it has been in the world of music. Second albums are a notoriously tricky obstacle for many musicians, but this week we celebrate the anniversary of the release of Nirvana's seminal second album 'Nevermind' by tipping our hats to acts made equally big steps forward with theirs. Hot Chip, Jamie T, Mystery Jets and Interpol are amongst the acts who receive shouts in what rapidly becomes an unabashed trip down memory lane for us. These are acts and albums we loved during our teenage years, and playing them again was a real joy for us. Hopefully hearing them will be for you too. Today's episode marks a quarter-century milestone for Tracks, and we celebrated the only way we know how - with a few beers and a lot of music chat. 2016 continues to be an absolutely incredible year for music, so we thought it was about time we checked in with part two of our 2016 So Far series. Splitting the year up into thirds may be an unconventional decision, but we're unconventional kinda guys. Some of the selections were, in all honesty, almost made for us. Yesterday at Tracks HQ, hearts audibly broke. On the morning of Monday 8th August, one of our all-time favourite bands The Maccabees called it a day and we immediately went into mourning. Rather than mope around the house, however, we decided to pull ourselves together and record a part tribute podcast, part group therapy session. This is the result. We go through our history with the band, telling stories and sharing memories connected to each of their four incredible albums and playing the songs we love the most. There are requests from other bereaved listeners, and plenty of emotion that anybody who has ever truly loved a band will relate to.
