    20/09/2019 Duración: 09min

Segment from The Marc Cox Morning Show-KFTK, St. Louis, MO Listen to the full episode: https://bit.ly/31PCRFM Patrick Tuohey is the Director of Municipal Policy at the Show-Me Institute: https://bit.ly/2m5L8ER The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a great piece by Jacob Barker on an effort by the city of Wentzville to partner with a private developer to finance and build a rec center it has long wanted. The outrage is that the private firm is connected to Stan Kroenke, owner of the St. Louis Los Angeles Rams, perhaps the most hated man in the St. Louis region. The rest of the piece catalogues the standard objections to special taxing districts, which in this case is a Community Improvement District (CID). They include: unfair taxation, developer subsidies, a blight finding so that the developer is even less constrained in spending the CID funds, and the lack of transparency in the tax collection and spending. While everything in the Post-Dispatch story is true, none of it is unique. Kroenke’s involvement may ma

  • SMI Podcast: It Shouldn't Be This Hard - Aisha Sultan

    10/09/2019 Duración: 32min

Read the full report on Missouri school performance data here: https://showmeinstitute.org/publication/accountability/report-missouris-report-card-and-essa-requirements The 2015 federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) includes a requirement intended to keep parents informed about the quality of the schools their children attend: States must produce “report cards” on their performance at the state, district, and local levels. The ESSA lists the data that must be included, so in theory, parents and other stakeholders can learn where a school or district is doing well and where improvement is needed. On August 28, 2019, the Show-Me Institute filed suit against Missouri’s Office of Administration for violating the state’s Sunshine Law. Government entities may think they can get away with these excuses because too few citizens are able to invest the time money and emotional energy required to pursue a legal fight to keep these government entities transparent and accountable. We have determined that this case is a crucial opportunity to ensure equality in government transparency for all Missourians.
