Good Brews Bad Views

Way back on our episode for Spider-Man 3, Jordan Ferraro made the unfortunate statement of claiming he had never seen Batman and Robin, so naturally we forced him to watch it (twice) when he wanted to come back on the podcast. As 2017 is the 20th anniversary of the movie that “killed” super hero films for a while (even though they never actually went away) we felt a certain obligation to do this movie aside from torturing poor Jordan. Meanwhile friend of the show Steve Cuff provides the GBBV Crew with tasty a beer from Wisconsin that is in such high demand within America’s Dairyland that they can’t sell it anywhere else.

Friend of the show Jess Sebring returns to Good Brews Bad Views to talk about 90’s hair, Encarta, war movies, kittens, Animorphs, furries, and this episode’s movie: Small Soldiers. It’s hard to tell if the movie spent more on the CGI and animatronics or it’s soundtrack as it features bands way too good for a movie that can’t decide if it’s for kids or teens. Meanwhile our beer choice for this episode is quite possibly the best we’ve drank on the podcast so far…

In the far off grim future of 2017 there is only Arnold Schwarzenegger imitating his roles from his previous movies in: The Running Man. Friend of the show Randy joins the GBBV Crew as they ponder why Arnold looks like a lame Aquaman, why this movie doesn’t feature more Captain Freedom, and wonder how long it will be before this movie gets remade.

We here at Good Brews Bad Views are in a constant game of one-upmanship with ourselves to find the worst movie we can stand and still have meaningful discussion about. It’s a thankless task but someone has to do it, for reasons we choose not to divulge…. Bearing only a slight resemblance to the beloved anime it is based on Dragonball Evolution may take the cake as the new ceiling of what we can endure (with beer).        

When you’re in a grim post-apocalyptic world and you need a bodyguard who can do the splits, look no further than Jean-Claude Van Damme in 1989’s Cyborg. As JCVD treks across the outskirts of what we assume is Pittsburgh we drink Bell’s Expedition Stout before the weather gets too warm for dark heavy beer.

We’ve actively been avoiding Adam Sandler movies as even we have our limits, but 2015’s Pixels was too enticing not watch for the podcast. Only once though, which means the return of Good Brews Blind Views where Max, James, and Ryan are going in without knowing what lies in store for this movie.

In this episode we take a step out of our 1990s adaptation comfort zone and into the dreaded genre known as Romantic Comedies. At the suggestion of our guest for this episode Katy, we delve into a movie about one of the worst holidays: Valentine’s Day. Tremble at the ensemble of noteworthy actors who star in this obvious date-night movie! Ponder at whether or not George Lopez’s character actually exists or is a figment of Ashton Kutcher’s imagination! And maybe give a few honest chuckles whenever Queen Latifah is on screen.

No one really expected Good Brews Bad Views to make it to 25 episodes, so for the monumental episode Max, James, and Ryan sit down and talk about how this boozy bad movie podcast has gone so far and what the future holds for GBBV. Tim Burton movies have one of the most immediately recognizable visual styles in film that often create a memorable world where his weird quirky stories can be told. However sometimes his movies focus a little bit too much on the vibrant flashbacks and Ketchup blood which ultimately leaves them lacking in the “plot coherence” department. Depending on which member of GBBV you ask, Sleepy Hollow may be such a film.

We conclude our 3-part series on terrible movies from our childhood with the 1994 live action Double Dragon adaptation.  Packed with bad puns, terrible special effects, a culturally appropriating villainous Robert Patrick, and some utterly bizarre cameos, Double Dragon may be the worst movie we’ve done on the podcast so far. We may actually be a little sorry about this one.

Continuing the Bad Movies from our Youth and Terrible Third Installments series is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. This time featuring time travel to feudal Japan, this movie sadly is nowhere near as cherished as the time traveling video game. What it does feature is a much more interesting sideplote that mostly happens off-screen unfortunately.

Episode 21 begins a three part series where we look back on the bad movie of our youths. First up is the painfully 90s movie Escape from L.A. This unnecessary sequel is basically the same movie as its 16 year predecessor Escape from New York, but is much much worse. Luckily the luscious hair of Kurt Russell makes the movie somewhat tolerable, despite the constant presence of Steve Buscemi. But only just.

This past weekend Max, James, and Ryan fulfilled a lifelong dream of seeing a live showing of The Room and also meeting the enigmatic Tommy Wiseau. It was an experience to say the least.

For our 20th episode we go back to the movie that started it all and the beer that just happened to get caught up in the events leading to this podcast: Super Mario Bros. and Dragon’s Milk. There is a lot of iconic imagery associated with the Super Mario game series, but don’t worry if you haven’t played any of them as you won’t find any of it here. What you will find is a lot of head scratching, Big Sets, and the ever present question: “Why?”

Everyone knows B is for “brains” a zombies favorite meal, but B is also for “box office bomb” which is what Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was. A few years too late, the movie suffers from “adapted for the big screen syndrome” wasting much of what an otherwise noteworthy cast had to offer. Friend of the show Kayla joins us as we change things up by switching from beer to an appropriately named cider: Zombie Killer. Sharpen your swords and prepare your dowery.

A sequel to the original Death Race 2000 that was 40 years in the making that also looks like it was also made for about $40, Death Race 2050 has all of the fun and color that was notably absent from the 2008 Jason Statham starring remake. Join us as we indulge in The Holy Grail of Michigan Beers: Hopslam, and marvel at the on-the-nose 2016 commentary.

We knew it was only a matter of time before we would tackle a movie starring the one and only Nic Cage, but what to choose from such a wide array of “films?” In the end we decided to go with 2016’s The Trust, a movie that starts off on one foot and quickly jumps to the opposite side of the spectrum with a single bound. Notable costars include Elijah Wood and Nic Cage’s mustache.

A movie best described as “If 2016 vomited all over a Hot Topic,” Suicide Squad is more of an all out assault on the senses more than an actual functioning film. Long time friend of the show Steve Cuff of Optimism Vaccine joins us in pondering such questions as “Why?” “How?” and “When will this end?” as well as bringing some fine beer from Wisconsin. We apologize for nothing.

Mythological beasts, feats of inhuman strength, meddling gods. These are the things that come to mind when one thinks of Hercules. However someone in Hollywood had the idea to make a Hercules movie that only vaguely had any of these things. And also have it star Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock aka The People’s Herc, but we don’t fault anyone for that.

In this episode we dig in to 1999’s Ravenous. It’s like Oregon Trail The Movie, but with cannibalism and executive meddling. Bon Appétite.
