Good Brews Bad Views

As much as the title would have you believe, Terminator Genysis is not about how Skynet takes over the world with a 1990s Sega video game system. The latest in the Terminator series is part sequel, part reboot, part movie that didn't make enough to have the sequel immediately green-lit. Keeping with the serial number theme of the movie, the GBBV Crew sip on some Short's Batch 8000 while they discuss things such as time travel, robo-arthritis, and whether they would rather see their favorite series have endless sequels or an eventual reboot.   Opening theme: Tha Silent Partner - Prohibition Brew and Pork Chops

Imagine if you will a movie that throws The Warriors, Escape from New York, and Road Warrior into a cheap Italian-made blender, 1990: The Bronx Warriors is basically what you would get from such a concoction. Friend of the show Randy returns to Good Brews Bad Views as we try to figure out how exactly lead actor Mark Gregory, the apply named Trash, manages to walk in pants that seem to be one with his body as we drink the fittingly named hefeweizen Homage from Watermark Brewing, a beer style we somehow avoided over nearly 50 episodes.

Lost in Space was a movie that the GBBV Crew put on the list of potential episodes early on in the life of the podcast and with the release of the Netflix series Max, James, and Ryan figured what better time than now to actually record it? This painfully 1990s designed sci-fi film based off a campy 1960s TV series that everyone has heard of (but few have ever seen) features the great Gary Oldman who promptly out-acts every other character in every scene much to the podcast hosts delight as they begroan the otherwise wooden acting and the retractable technology that this movie has a fetish for.

Up next James, Max, and Ryan dig into the Michael Fassbender helmed Assassin's Creed, the "best video game movie ever made," which when you think about it is a rather low bar to surpass. Filled with overly long exchanges of people staring seriously at each other the movie is also overly repetative in it's action scenes and despite the good selection of talent the movie features is filled with characters we only have a semblance to care about. This mediocrity ultimately leads to a lengthy heated discussion about story adaptation across various forms of media, hold on to your butts.

 Practical or CGI, well aged or spoiled like rotten fruit, special effects in movies are an accomplishment of their own in some form or fashion (usually) and one of our favorite reasons to watch a movie and something everyone remembers about a movie for good or bad. Friend of the show Claire returns to Good Brews Bad Views to discuss The Cell while we try to figure out when exaclty does a movie rely too much on the visuals, being weird and transgressive for it's own sake, which results in ultimatelly leaving the narrative a little lacking. But don't worry we also crack wise at Jenny from the Block and Vince Vaughn as we enjoy some tasty Gose as well.

From Ivan Reitman, director of such comedy classics as Ghostbusters and Stripes, comes a movie with such glaring product placement you'd think you were watching a James Bond film: Evolution. Witness David Duchovny at his most wooden, Julianne Moore's perpetual lack of balance, Sean William Scott at his Sean William Scott-est, all while Orlando Jones captures the hearts of the GBBV Crew while they drink a brown ale that tastes like coffee and donuts and laud over the practical effects.

"What you're telling me we're some kind of movie where this orc is a fantasy standin for instituionalized racism?" - Cut Lines from Will Smith's Dialog. For this episode Good Brews Bad Views dig's into Netflix's first big budget sci-fi movie Bright, as we like to suffer for your enjoyment. Ryan, James, and Max dig into everything from the worldbuilding, vernacular, and seriosuly bipolar policemen showing this movie does not lack in topics for discussion. Luckily we brought a few stupidly awesome beers with us to aid us through another David Ayer mess.

Usually here at Good Brews Bad Views we dig into movies that are somewhat known to allow you the listener to watch along with us if you so choose, and while they are often bad they are somewhat enjoyable. This episode we change that by going to the bottom of the barrel with a gem of a bad movie that can only be described by the phrase "fantastically terrible" Get Even aka Road to Revenge aka Champagne & Bullets Written, Starred, Produced, Edited, and Composed by the one and only John de Heart Friend of the show Steve Cuff returns to take Good Brews Bad Views on a tour de force of a movie that resulted in us drinking more beer than any other episode, all while dropping tidbits that you can only get by having a 2 hr conversation with the director.  

If you're listening to this podcast/reading this blurb chances are that 1995's GoldenEye was the first James Bond movie that you can remember being released in your lifetime. Some would say it's actually a pretty decent movie. To find out Ryan, James, and Max revisit the 1st Pierce Brosnan helmed movie to see if this is true and to check up on how the movie has aged over 20+ years. Surely all the references that Russia is no longer the USSR won't be glaring obvious right?

Merry Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Fesitvus/Whatever from all of us at Good Brews Bad Views! For our second Christmas episode this year we witness a Pre-Mr. Freeze Arnold Schwarzenegger try to buy his son's love, a Pre-Anakin Skywalker Jake Lloyd, in 1996's Jingle All the Way. Alongside the rampant commercialism and insanity displayed in this movie James, Ryan, and Max discuss their cherished Christmas presents from years past while Sinbad makes a bunch of jokes that would no longer fly in 2017.

Appropriately timed for both the release of The Last Jedi and the Holidays, GBBV starts off the season with the often mentioned and utterly horrible Star Wars Holiday Special. Joined once again by friend of the show Jordan (Spider-Man 3, Batman and Robin) and foregoing the usual beer for whiskey (something stronger was required) the guys dig in deep with conversations about fandom, representation, gatekeeping, and expanded universes as they suffer through the special with the occasional screams of "why?!?!" and "Who is this for!?!" as the podcast slowly descends into madness.

It seems like after the success of 2003's Freddy Vs. Jason, Hollywood decided it was time to have all the 80s franchises meet up in one way or another. While the two alien races had clashed in comics and video games it wasn't until 2004 that two of the 1980's most iconic sci-fi series meet up in a frozen free-for-all in Alien Vs. Predator. Of course hapless humans that we don't really care too much about are also in tow for the ride. On the beer side, Max, Ryan, and James enjoy a seasonably appropriate Barleywine that they absolutely could not get enough of: Batch Brewing Company's All the Fixin's.

Jean Claude Van Damme is known for many things, however being a French-Canadian former firefighter/hockey player and now fire inspector for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995's Sudden Death is not one of them. Hockey and hop head Stephanie joins us this episode as we cheer on the Chicago Blackhawks (as we are not cheering on Pittsburgh) as we enjoy some of her very appropriately named homebrew: Jean Quad Van Damme

Friend of the show Claire joins us for our second Halloween episode as we cheer on Youths making poor decisions in Freddy Vs. Jason. The horror icon matchup that slasher fans have been longing to see since the stinger of Jason Goes to Hell that took countles rewrites to "work," the end result... well at least it isn't Batman V Superman Happy Halloween!

With the rampant success of the new It movie, GBBV decided to start the Halloween season on a similar note with Killer Klowns from Outer Space. While enjoying the antics of space alien clowns Ryan argues that the only thing creepier than a clown is a moist one while Max and James have a discussion on small town-college relations of years past all while enjoying a tasty blackcurrant saison from Clown Shoes.  

If you're going to have a movie that satirizes fascism and tries to convince people that Denise Richards is an actual human being with a non-wooden face, i.e. Starship Troopers, then maybe you should actually satirize fascism and try to have Denise Richards act like she doesn't have a wooden face. Other such topics of discussion in this episode include cellaring Belgian Quads,  the Micro-Machines of childhoods past, Space-Nazis and their trenchcoats, the majesty that is Clancy Brown and Space Bug Design: Good and Bad.

Long ago when Image Comics were the fresh new kids on the block and people weren’t looking back on 1990s comics and cringing there was Spawn, Todd McFarlane’s crispy hell-powered hero that somehow managed to get a movie 5 years after his creation. While we complement the makeup that’s aged like a nice high gravity stout and suffer through CGI that’s aged like milk, we enjoy some fresh beer from Short’s Brewing Co that we absolutely adore.  

The name King Arthur evokes a lot of different mental images: fair Camelot, swords in stones, gallant knights, magic, and a British comedy troupe that had a penchant for wearing dresses. 2004’s King Arthur has absolutely none of those, instead trying to cast Arthur as an actual historical figure who was a Roman knight who is on the Historical Fantasy version of “One Last Job”. But for trying to be a historical film James and Max take much joy pointing out the blatant historical inaccuracies on numerous fronts, while Ryan lauds over “one of the best things I’ve drank on this podcast.”
