  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club - Rushmore (1998)

    04/08/2018 Duración: 56min

For this episode of Berkreviews.com Movie Club during August's month of High School movies, Corey (@coreyrstarr) selected Rushmore (1998). The film is a favorite of Jonathan's (@berkreviews), but one that Corey had somehow missed. It's directed by Wes Anderson and stars Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, and Olivia Williams. The two discuss what they liked or maybe didn't about the film that gave us Schwartzman! Next week... Jonathan picked Fast Times at Ridgemont High as it's a widely popular high school film that he hasn't seen. Directed by Amy Heckerling and starring Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, and Phoebe Cates, it's considered by many to be a comedy classic. Corey saw it once before, but says its been a while. Unfortunately, it's not currently available with any subscription services, but you can rent it on VOD almost anywhere. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club - City of God (2002)

    29/07/2018 Duración: 55min

Jonathan (@berkreviews) picked the film City of God (2002) for the last movie from the coming of age theme. Corey (@coreyrstarr) had not seen it either, which means they leave July both checking another movie off their gap list. The film was directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund starring Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, and Matheus Nachtergaele. It's been on Jonathan list for a few years after a student recommended it during the 366 challenge.  Next episode: Rushmore (1998) For the month of August, Corey and Jonathan have selected films that deal with school in honor of that dreaded time of year when students are pulled back in. Corey has not seen Rushmore, which is directed by Wes Anderson and stars Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Olivia Williams. However, this is one of Jonathan's favorite films so he's very excited for her to finally see it.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Top Five Movies - Supporting Characters

    26/07/2018 Duración: 01h17min

In honor of Simon Pegg's role in the Mission Impossible franchise, Jonathan (@berkreviews), Corey (@coreyrstarr), and Michael (@servermonkey) decided to look at their favorite movie sidekicks or supporting characters. Each approached their lists slightly differently, but there still managed to be one overlapping pick. There are tons of characters or actors who deserve to be mentioned here, but only 14 were able to be selected. Check out our lists as there is a chance we talk spoilers when explaining why we love these particular characters. Top Five Movies formats There are two types of Top Five Movie episodes. The traditional format of the show features Jonathan and two guests, usually Corey and Mike, who create their lists for the chosen topic in secret and reveal them on the episode. The other format is an interview style where a guest discusses films in general and ends the episode going over their personal, all-time Top Five. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/suppor

  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club - Garden State (2004)

    22/07/2018 Duración: 01h01min

For the third episode of July's coming of age movies, Corey (@coreyrstarr) selected Garden State. Directed, written, and starring Zach Braff and featuring performances from Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard. Jonathan (@berkreviews) watched it once before (read his review here), but was looking forward to seeing it again. The film could have split the two, but it worked out that Corey was into this one. Next episode - City of God (2002) Jonathan picked the film City of God for the last movie from the coming of age theme. The film is directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund starring Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, and Matheus Nachtergaele. It's been on his list for a few years and he's excited to get it off the gap list. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club - Y Tu Mamá También (2001)

    15/07/2018 Duración: 44min

Jonathan (@berkreviews) chose Y Tu Mamá También for the second film during July for the coming of age theme. Neither he nor Corey (@coreyrstarr) had seen this 2001 film directed by Alfonso Cuarón starring Maribel Verdú, Gael García Bernal, and Diego Luna. Jonathan and Corey definitely didn't see eye to eye on this film though. It's definitely viewing for mature audiences but is available to stream on Netflix. Next episode: Garden State (2004) Corey has never seen Zach Braff's Garden State (2004) and it is her selection for the next episode. Zach Braff stars alongside Peter Sarsgaard and Natalie Portman. Jonathan watched this a couple of years ago but is looking forward to a second viewing. They'd love to hear your thoughts on the film so send an email to contact@berkreviews.com for a chance to have your ideas read on the episode. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Top Five Movies - Dynamic Duos

    12/07/2018 Duración: 01h01min

Because of the recent release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Jonathan (@berkreviews), Corey (@coreyrstarr), and Michael (@servermonkey) took a look through movie viewing history to find their Top Five Dynamic Duos. The idea was to find movies that feature a pair of heroes/buddies/opposites working together for a common goal. Check out the lists below, as we often speak freely about the movies (though for the two that haven't had wide releases Jonathan took care not to spoil anything). Visit Berkreviews.com to see each of their lists to avoid potential spoilers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club - The Graduate (1967)

    08/07/2018 Duración: 01h03min

The month of July is all coming of age stories. Corey (@coreyrstarr)has never seen The Graduate before so it was an obvious first choice. Jonathan (@berkreviews) watched it during his 366 challenge (read the review here) but was excited to see the film a second time. It was directed by Mike Nichols and stars Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katharine Ross.  If you didn't catch this one at the time of recording it was available to stream on Prime Instant Video. Next week - Y Tu Mamá También (2001) Jonathan selected Y Tu Mamá También (2001) for the next film. It's one that came highly recommended to him and is on a few other film lists for coming of age movies. The film is directed by Alfonso Cuarón and stars Maribel Verdú, Gael García Bernal, Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Diego Luna. Corey hasn't seen this one either so it's a first for each. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

  • Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 077 - Tangerine (2015)

    30/06/2018 Duración: 01h05min

With the month of June coming to a close, so does the LBGTQ+ theme. Jonathan (@berkreviews) chose Tangerine (2015) directed by Sean Baker and starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian. Neither he nor Corey (@coreyrstarr) had seen it, but they both loved his 2017 film The Florida Project. Tangerine follows Sin-Dee (Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Taylor) on Christmas Eve as they search for Chester (James Ransone), Sin-Dee's pimp and boyfriend, who may have betrayed her trust. The film starts off a little rocky and hard to watch, but by the end won both, Jonathan and Corey, over.  episode 078 - The Graduate (1967) July brings the theme of Coming of Age movies and Corey has never seen director Mike Nichols' film The Graduate (1967). The film stars Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock as he tries to figure out "what's next," after college. He finds himself torn between two relationships one with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and her daughter, Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross). --- Support this pod

  • Berkreviews.com Top Five Movies ep 102 - of John Travolta

    28/06/2018 Duración: 01h06min

For this episode, Jon (@berkreviews), Corey (@coreyrstarr), and Michael (@servermonkey) decided to take a look at the films of John Travolta. His film Gotti isn't doing so well right now, but it is the 40th anniversary of Grease. None of us have taken the time to see Gotti, but Michael did pick it for his fantasy team. Still, Travolta has done some good work despite many of his stinkers. Jonathan's List: 5. Look Who's Talking 4. The Punisher 3. Bolt 2. Get Shorty 1. Pulp Fiction Mike's List: 5. Phenomenon (1996) 4. The General's Daughter (1999) 3. Blow Out (1981) 2. Get Shorty (1995) 1. Saturday Night Fever (1977) Corey's List: 5. Look Who's Talking Now (1993) 4. Look Who's Talking (1989) 3. Carrie (1976) 2. • Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 076 - A Single Man (2009)

    24/06/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Continuing with the theme for Pride Month of LBGTQ+ movies, Corey (@coreyrstarr) selected Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009). The movie stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, and Nicholas Hoult. Jonathan (@berkreviews) hadn't heard of it prior to Corey's suggestion, but both ended up really enjoying the film. Firth did manage to get an Oscar nomination for his performance and it is clearly well deserved. Next week: Tangerine (2015) Jonathan selected Sean Baker's film, shot on iPhone 5s, Tangerine (2015) for the next episode. It stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian, and much like Baker's Florida Project its based around some truth. The film had a lot of buzz coming out of Sundance and it's been on Jonathan's radar for some time. It is currently available to stream on Netflix. • Top Five Movies episode 101 - Gap List

    21/06/2018 Duración: 01h31min

Berkreviews.com Top Five Movies episode 101 - Gap List Jonathan (@berkreviews), Corey (@coreyrstarr), and Michael (@servermonkey) got together to discuss their Top Five Movies that are on their Gap List. In other words, what movies do they know they should have seen but for some reason never did. Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't as strong as usual and there is a pretty bad echo on Mike's voice. However, we were happy enough with the discussions on the episode we didn't want to not issue it.  Jonathan's list: 5. The Iron Giant 4. The Green Mile 3. Scarface 2. Raging Bull 1. Gone with the Wind Mike's list:  5. Men Behind the Sun (1988) 4. El Topo (1970) 3. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) 2. Harold and Maude (1971) 1. The Exorcist (1973) Corey's list:  5. • Berkreviews Movie Club Episode 075 - My Own Private Idaho

    17/06/2018 Duración: 55min

Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 075 - My Own Private Idaho (1991) The month of June features movies that qualify as LBGTQ+ and Jonathan (@berkreviews) picked My Own Private Idaho (1991). Corey (@coreyrstarr) has seen this Gus Van Sant film before that stars River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, and James Russo, but Jonathan had not. There are some interesting aspects of this film including a scene where models on magazine covers come to life and start conversing about prostitution. There are some definite rough spots in the film, but overall both Jonathan and Corey enjoyed it. Next weeks episode: A Single Man (2009) Corey picked A Single Man (2009) for next weeks episode of movie club. The film is directed by Tom Ford and starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Matthew Goode. Colin Firth was nominated for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars that year. Unfortunately, this film isn't easy to get as it doesn't appear to be available on any streaming platforms. S --- Support this pod

Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 072 - Hard Eight (1996) The last film for Paul Thomas Anderson Month was actually his first feature, Hard Eight (1996). The film stars Phillip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and Gwyneth Paltrow.  Neither Corey (@coreyrstarr) nor Jonathan (@berkreviews) had seen this film so it was a good choice to end on it. Both had some positives, but it definitely wasn't their favorite of PTA's films. Of course, it probably shouldn't be! Next Months theme and next episode The month of June will be LBGTQ+ inspired films. Brokeback Mountain (2005) directed by Ang Lee and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, and Michelle Williams will be the first movie of the month.
