Top Five Movies episode 091 - Tom E. Brown For this episode of Top Five Movies Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) interview filmmaker Tom E. Brown. His movie, Pushing Dead (2016), will be available for VOD in April, but Jonathan got to see it at the FL Film Fest in 2017. It was one of his favorite films of the festival so he reached out to Tom about being on this show. Tom was a great guest and had a lot of awesome movie knowledge and experience to share. Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 061 - Crash (2004) Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) are continuing exploring Academy Award Best Picture winners that they've never seen. For this episode, they watched Crash (2004) directed by Paul Haggis starring Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Thandie Newton, Karina Arroyave, Brendan Fraser, Michael Peña, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Terrance Howard, and Ludacris. It's a huge cast and an interesting movie. Though was it Best Picture worthy? Listen to the episode to hear their thoughts. I’ll be attending the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas from March 9th through the 16th. I’ve been very impressed with SXSW online tools and the ability to plan my screenings on their ap. Of course, plans will change and I may hear buzz about a movie that I hadn’t planned on seeing and decide to drop something and go see that. Nevertheless, I’ve basically planned my whole week. I invited Matt from What I Watched Tonight to join me on this bonus episode of Berkreviews.com Moviecasts to discuss a couple of films from each day I’ll be attending the festival as well as suggesting a couple that interest him that didn’t make my list. Berkreviews.com Movie Club episode 060 - Chicago During the month of March, Berkreviews.com Movie Club will be focusing on past Academy Awards Best Picture winners that we've never seen. Chicago (2002) ended up being first on the list after Big Tuna challenged Jonathan (@berkreviews) to watch it as part of the Take 5 movie challenge. Jonathan had never seen the film, but Corey (@coreyrstarr) had watched it once before. This is one of the times where they don't see eye to eye, but that makes for some quality conversation. The film was directed by Rob Marshall and stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger, Dominic West, John C. Reilly, Queen Latifah, and Richard Gere. The duo also discussed what they watched since the last time they recorded, Kevin Smith's heart attack, and Jonathan's upcoming trip to SXSW. Berk Reviews Movie Club episode 059 - About Time (2013) The last episode for the February theme of romcoms Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) watched About Time (2013). The film was written and directed by Richard Curtis and stars Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, and Margot Robbie. This film comes recommended two-years-ago by a co-worker of Jonathan's and he finally gave it a watch. The film adds an interesting time-travel element to the genre and offers some fun and refreshing moments. Before getting into their review of the film, Jonathan and Corey discuss the other things they've been watching during the week. Next Week - Chicago (2002) In an effort to kill two birds with one stone, and to introduce the theme of March, Jonathan has selected Chicago. Berk Reviews Movie Club episode 058 - Larry Crowne Corey (@coreyrstarr) picked the Tom Hanks written, directed, and starring vehicle Larry Crowne (2011) for our third film for the romcom theme of February. Neither her nor Jonathan (@berkreviews) had seen the film before and both love Hanks! The film also stars Julia Roberts, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Wilmer Valderrama, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Rami Malek. It's a film with flaws, but one that has tons of charm. Next up for Movie Club: About Time Two years ago, while Jonathan was in the middle of his 7-in-7 challenge, a co-worker suggested the film About Time (2013). Jonathan purchased it then but has still not seen it. With mounting pressure from that co-worker, Jonathan and Corey will venture into this film directed by Richard Curtis and starring Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Nighy. Berk Reviews Movie Club episode 058 - Sleepless in Seattle The second episode of our February theme of Romantic Comedies continues with the 1993 classic Sleepless in Seattle. Neither Corey Starr (@coreyrstarr) nor Jonathan Berk (@berkreviews) had seen this, at least not as adults, so it made sense to add it to the list. The film is directed by Nora Ephron and stars Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Ross Malinger with some strong support from Bill Pullman and Rosie O'Donnell. Both were surprised at how the story unfolds in this film and mainly enjoyed it. But to find out exactly how much they liked it you'll need to listen to the episode. Berk Reviews Movie Club episode 057 - Moonstruck (1987) The month of February here at Berkreviews.com is going to see Movie Club focus on Romantic Comedies. A genre that Jonathan is a big sucker for, but has missed some pretty iconic ones. Corey picked Moonstruck (1987) directed by Norman Jewison starring Cher, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, and Danny Aiello. It's a film that has a pretty high rating on whatever platform you look at, but definitely feels grounded in '80s New York.  Next weeks episode 058 - Sleepless in Seattle  Neither Jonathan nor Corey has seen the rom-com classic Sleepless in Seattle (1993). The film is directed by Nora Ephron and stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Berk Reviews Movie Club Episode 056 - Boyhood To finish the first month of year two's theme of Certified Fresh, which are movies that are on the Rotten Tomatoes all-time top 100 list that either Jonathan or Corey or both haven't seen, Jonathan selected Richard Linklater's Boyhood (2014). The film stars Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Lorelei Linklater. It had a lot of awards acclaim and boasts a unique filmmaking elements having been filmed over 12 years. Corey had seen this before, but Jonathan had skipped it not sure if the 2 hour and 45minute run time was worth the risk of the novelty. This episode of Berk Reviews Top Five Movies is our first Oscar Draft. We have special guest Brendan Maloney and Big Tuna from Big Tuna on Films with Corey, Michael, and Jonathan. Continuing with the theme of Certified Fresh in January, Jonathan and Corey picked L.A. Confidential (1997) off the top 100 all time from Rotten Tomatoes. The film is directed by Curtis Hanson and stars Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, and, unfortunately, Kevin Spacey. The film has a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and neither Jonathan nor Corey had seen it.
