Sinopsis

Hi...We're Chris and Andrew. We watch bad movies. Well mostly bad. One day we thought that, perhaps, other people might enjoy what we had to say about said movies. I know I know...ridiculous. Yet here we are, audibly spewing our thoughts and musings in the general direction of your tender ear holes. Horror flicks, cult films, anything in the Sci-fi oeuvre, and just plain old crap. So give it a download and join us in our Search for Schlock. Or not...we can't make you...yet.

Episodios

  • Southern Comfort (1981)

    19/12/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-065-SouthernComfort.mp3 Download MP3 We're going into this one blind; it made the list only because it was one of those movies that left a hazy impression on Chris at a young age, and he never got to see the ending. We're familiar with much of the cast and crew: it's directed by Walter Hill who brought us Crossroads (not the one with Britney Spears), and it features Fred Ward from Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and Lewis Smith from The Heavenly Kid, giving it a Search For Schlock Score of at least 3 and strongly suggesting that we've seen too many movies. In any case, there's reason to be cautiously optimistic. It's Deliverance in the bayou, y'all! So, just with a lot of people talking about how much they love gumbo. • Rad (1986)

    05/12/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-064-Rad.mp3 Download MP3 We have two criteria for any movie we select for Search for Schlock. One, that it be directed by Hal Needham, who brought us some of our favorite movies about illegal coast-to-coast racing. And two, that it be about BMX bikes, which, as you know, is what we're all about. Rad is a perfect example of exactly what we're looking for, plus it features Adrian from Rocky, your favorite Martian, and Uncle Jesse's girlfriend. Will Cru realize his dreams of owning a Corvette by beating an anonymously evil pro-biker at Helltrack -- or will the race's duplicitous financiers succeed in sabotaging Cru's one shot at fame and fortune? Find out in...Rad. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • Rhinestone (1984)

    21/11/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-063-Rhinestone.mp3 Download MP3 What better way to follow up the sublime terribleness of Cobra than with 80s megastar Sylvester Stallone's infamous country music romantic comedy? No better way, that's what. Stallone eschewed starring roles in both Romancing the Stone and Beverly Hills Cop to co-star with country queen Dolly Parton in this, arguably the most reviled flop in his hilariously flop-filled career. But you can't go wrong with the premise: it's basically She's All That, except she's Sylvester Stallone, and instead of making him the prom queen or whatever, the goal is to make him a passable country-western singer. And instead of money on the line, it's whether Dolly Parton has to have sex with her manager. It's not really much like She's All That. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • My Science Project (1985)

    08/11/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-062-MyScienceProject.mp3 Download MP3 Yet again do we all pay for Chris's nostalgic love of 80s movies starring Fisher Stevens. In this one, Fisher sports a goofy Brooklyn accent, so it's not as offensive. In this one, some high school kids find the discarded power source from a UFO, which the U.S. government apparently left in a junkyard and didn't bother to study or whatever. So naturally they hook it up to a car battery, and cause a time warp that threatens all of reality. And that's it, really. Rick Baker is involved, so parts of it look good, at least (including an impressive-for-1985 dinosaur sequence), and there's a tongue-in-cheek Dennis Hopper role. What can I say? Chris has bad taste in movies. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • Cobra (1986)

    24/10/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-061-Cobra.mp3 Download MP3 Cobra is the story of Los Angeles police officer Marion Cobretti and his one-man, several-automatic-weapon war on a cult of murderers led by the Night Slasher (played by that guy from X-Files with the face). So you can see why we knew we'd love it. American auteur Sylvester Stallone wrote and starred, but inexplicably did not direct; SFS favorites Golan and Globus produced, god bless 'em. This is the kind of movie that played right to every Reagan voter's base assumptions about rampant crime and the appropriately deadly response necessary -- we're talking almost Death Wish 3 levels of anarchy and vigilantism. (I may have mentioned that we love Golan-Globus.) Much of Cobra came from Stallone's idea of what Beverly Hills Cop should have been like, so maybe he's not as smart as we think he is. • The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982)

    10/10/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-060-SwordAndTheSorcerer.mp3 Download MP3 We've seen Brain Smasher...A Love Story and we've seen Captain America, but we decided to give director Albert Pyun one more chance anyway and watch what is perhaps Pyun's most well-regarded film. (Sorry, Alien from L.A.) This one is a fantasy epic about a guy with a sword that's really three swords, and it shoots swords out of it. It's every bit as awesome as I just made it sound. Also along for the ride is Bull from Night Court and Frank Fontana from Murphy Brown, or as we call them, "The Dream Team." Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

    26/09/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-059-HedwigAndTheAngryInch.mp3 Download MP3 Longtime listeners know that the all-powerful Omegahedron has good sides as well as bad, and that occasionally we watch movies that don't suck. This is one of those times, particularly because Andrew has been trying to get Chris to watch Hedwig for years, and the only way to make Chris watch any movie is coercion. That's not to say Hedwig is an inappropriate choice; even more than a decade after its release and in the wake of a Broadway revival starring Doogie Howser, Hedwig enjoys only cult-level popularity and continues to drift below the general pop-cultural radar, in spite of being excellent in just about every way that matters. Well, you're not going to get mainstream acceptance by casting Michael Pitt, I guess. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • Dondi (1961)

    12/09/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-058-dondi.mp3 Download MP3 Based on a comic strip that was published for three decades but that you've somehow never heard of, Dondi is the story of an adorable orphan boy (David Kory, a child actor so bad that nobody even seems to have done a 'where are they now' piece on him) who gets adopted by a philandering American G.I. (world-weary Fugitive star David Janssen, looking miserable as ever in this upbeat role). There's a federal law that all descriptions of this movie must contain the word "saccharine", so there you go, feds. This movie was brought to our attention by the very hit-or-miss Fifty Worst Films of All Time, and in our opinion at least, they got this one right -- it may well have unseated the abysmal Guyver: Dark Hero as Worst Piece of Crap We've Ever Sat Through for This. • Left Behind: The Movie (2000)

    29/08/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-057-leftBehindTheMovie.mp3 Download MP3 We met up before recording this one and agreed that we wouldn't let it devolve into an overlong assessment of our own religious beliefs. Then, we drank a lot. Guess what happened next! In other words, if you're not a fan of drunken navel-gazing, feel free to skip this week. If that kind of thing is exactly your cup o' tea, then you've got a magnificent eighty or so minutes in front of you. We're really sorry about this, but in our defense we had to talk about something, and there's not much to say about teen-idol-turned-demagogue Kirk Cameron's bland performance in this boring adaptation, which we guarantee would be an even bigger waste of your time than listening to us blather on. So we've got that going for us. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.

  • Freaked (1993)

    16/08/2014

http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-056-freaked-2.mp3 Download MP3 With a box office budget of less than $30,000 against an estimated budget of 12 million, Freaked is not what you would call a commercial success -- but don't let that fool you. You know how, in movies about Hollywood, the protagonist has a quirky project that a studio exec is really excited about, but then the studio exec gets fired and the movie gets shelved by their replacement? Well this is one of those. Featuring an all-people-you-sort-of-recognize cast (including Bill S. Preston, Esq., Blossom's brother, and Hollywood Star-Whacker target Randy Quaid in his best role), Freaked is surprisingly hilarious from start to finish. We should take listener requests more often.
