The men almost immediately started shooting. The guard explains he shot back but didn't think he hit any of them. When a blood trail is spotted outside, however, the police follow it into a city underground tunnel where they find one of the thieves dead. His death, the detectives deduce, was not caused by bullets from the guard, but rather came from a machine gun. One or both of his partners had finished him off.
