On the road to success, every day will not bring sunny skies and smooth pavements. We will have our share of driving on uneven pavements during unfavorable weather. Sometimes, it will get so bad that our visibility will be obstructed and we can’t see down the road. We may start to doubt and wonder, “Should I pull over to the side of the road; should I turn around and go back to where I came from?” In this week’s episode, Darold takes us back to the basics. Back to the beginning stages of our dreams, visions, and plans and reflect. Who and/or what was the motivation behind wanting to pursue our passions? Remembering the reasons allows us to continue journeying on until we reach our destination. “I don’t think so much that we’re short of advice, we’re short of knowledge, we’re short of the know-how. I think we’re missing one thing, and one thing only, action.” In this week’s episode, Darold talks to us on the topic of being relentless.  It’s just the motivation you’ll need to help you kick your pursuits up a notch, or to get back in the game. We all have dreams, we all have a greater purpose; it’s time now to pursue them passionately and relentlessly. You owe it to yourself to live your best life possible and not pursuing your path because of certain hang-ups just won’t cut it. It’s time to let go of all the negative thoughts so that you can excel. Think about where you are right now in life. What’s going well for you? How can you build upon those things? What are the areas that you want to improve upon? What’s preventing you from doing so? There are times when we feel as if we’ve hit a brick wall and no matter how hard we try, it feels as if we can’t free ourselves. This starts a downward spiral and a back and forth game of naming off out failures one by one. This way of thinking is toxic and does nothing to motivate us and reignite our passion. Today’s episode is different, there are no interviews, just a reminder that you, right where you are, are good enough. As you listen, I pray that whatever you need, be if healing, determination, discipline, etc., may start to blossom within you. Hello everyone, it’s Talent Tuesday here at Passion Behind The Art and this week Darold speaks to hand-lettering artist Hayley Barry. Don’t be deceived by her age; she may only be 22, but her design skills are far beyond her years. At the age of 16, working at an antique store, her sale signs drew clients looking to purchase them instead of the items advertised. When she was 18, due to her tenacity to succeed in the art field, she landed a personal assistant job for a top calligrapher. In addition to doing freelance work, Hayley also conducts workshops and teaches as an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University. Not bad for a youngin’ at all. In this episode, Hayley discusses all the ways she makes revenue and the hurdles she had to jump over to stay on track. In this episode, Darold sits down with talented illustrator Dave Mottram. So what’s his story you ask? As a child, Mottram grew up watching Sesame Street and reading The Monster At The End of The Book to which he credits sparked his desire to draw. In high school, although he felt like he was an outsider, his drawings provided a way for him to gain access to many groups as they would request him to sketch their images. His parents pushed him to attend college where he majored in graphic design with a minor in illustration. In this interview, Mottram shares more of his story, chronicling how he transitioned from graphics to pursue his love of illustration to eventually branching out on his own. He offers counsel to those who may doubt their talents and the ones that feel like they’re entering the creative field later than others. Darold’s design career started out with doing freelance and contracts. His day job took him from the architectural field then to finance, before he was able to obtain a job within the marketing/design field which would allow him to showcase his design skills. Darold Pinnock meets with two special women who are creatives that specialize in art licensing. If you’re like me, you have no clue what that is. Thankfully for us, Ilana Griffo, who is a hand lettering artist, surface designer and author of Mind Your Business, was available to spend some time and shed light on the field. She is joined with her business partner Katie Johnson, a lettering artist, freelance studio owner of Katie Made That. These ladies, while not meeting in person, joined forces to co-host an art licensing course that provides awareness and information on how to get into the field. There is something to be said about a person that gives of their time and resources to help others. Alicja Colon is a great example of such a person. In her interview with Passion Behind The Art Show creator, Darold Pinnock, she discusses her freelance journey. She is a 15-year veteran artist and the creator of Thrice Studio. This interview addresses her inspiration to branch out on her own stems from her desire to help others. Her main motivation is her family and her desire to, in her words, “Take care of my family the way they need me to take care of them.” Her heart can be felt as she discusses her desire to be emotionally healthy and available for her three kids. She talks about having the time to assist her middle daughter, who has a mild form of dyslexia with her reading. Rob McClurkan is a husband, father, graphic designer, illustrator and co-creator of the creative networking group, Small Town Creatives. This interview will give hope to other creatives who struggle to find their place in the world. This week, Darold sits down Gia Graham. Graham, a Barbados native, is a lettering artist whose creative journey started as a child who would always love to draw and doodle. Her high school art teacher introduced her to the work of graphic design prompting her to search out universities that offered that curriculum. Graham gives a great interview as she further details her creative passage. She details how she started out working as a junior designer during the analog time period to transitioning to an entrepreneur and upgrading to digital design. She highlights how networking and bravery contributed to the growth of her business. In addition to that, you will see why she attributes why the birth of her second child opened up the world of lettering.
