Be Restored, 2 Kings 5:1-19
18/03/2018In this story we see an incredible picture of what it means to have a life changing encounter God. Naaman did not disengage from his current occupation, but rather he sought to live extraordinarily consistent in every part of his life. We too are called to live consistently in worship to God our Father no matter what circumstance or job occupation we find ourselves in. 1. A Forgiving Heart (vs. 1-3) 2. A Proud Heart (vs. 4-13) 3. The Easter Story in the Old Testament, Genesis 22 & 24
18/03/2018God’s redemptive plan for mankind culminated with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. However, the plan itself was laid out centuries earlier. To get a new perspective of the Easter story, we will be looking at four Old Testament characters; Abraham, Isaac, Eliezer and Rebekah and how they point to an even greater story. 8 - Teaching Parables, Mark 4:1-20
11/03/2018The proclamation of the kingdom of God will not be received equally by those who hear it. Using parables, Jesus teaches on the nature of the gospel and how, while it does not always take root in every heart, when it does take root, it bears tremendous fruit. Since we can never know how one will respond, we are to share the good news as much as we have opportunity. 1. The Parable of the Sower (vs. 1-9) 2. The Secret of the Kingdom (vs. 10-12) 3. 7 - Engaging Scoffers, Mark 3:20-35
04/03/2018Not everybody responded with enthusiasm to Jesus’ increasing popularity. His earthly family thought him crazy and sought to discourage his work, and scribes had begun to come down from Jerusalem to openly challenge him. Despite the opposition, Jesus remains steadfast in his commitment to do the will of his father. We too should expect opposition and must remain committed even when those closest to us turn 1. Do not mistake intensity for insanity (vs. 20-21) 2. Do not mistake the work of the Spirit for the work of Satan (vs. 22-30) 3. 6 - Calling Others, Mark 3:7-19
25/02/2018As Jesus’ ministry continued to grow, he began to entrust his work to others. He called the disciples to himself so that they could be with him and so that he could send them out to preach and cast out demons. Still today, Jesus calls us to participate with him in his gospel ministry; beginning in his presence, we are equipped and sent out. 1. Jesus knew pressure (vs. 7-12) 2. Jesus knew pause (v.13) 3. 5 - Taking Questions, Mark 2:13-3:6
18/02/2018Failing to recognize who Jesus was, some began to question his decisions and challenge his authority. In each case, Jesus responded with truth and pointed people toward the new work he was doing. We too will find Jesus’ new way radical and life-changing as we follow him. 1. What is with the "sinners"? (vs. 13-17) 2. Why are they eating? (vs. 18-22) 3. What about the law? (vs. 23-28) 4. How far will he go? Something Greater, 1 Kings 19:19-21 / 2 Kings 2:8-14
11/02/2018When God calls us to follow Him, he is calling us to something greater than we could ever ask or imagine. Too often, however, we are satisfied by following the call of our own selfish heart. In the call of Elisha we see how God’s call leads to something greater, even though at first it seems to be exactly the opposite. Elisha was a wealthy man, but to be faithful to God’s call he gave up his wealth. Elisha was a man of authority, but he gave up his authority to serve Elijah for 18 years. As Elisha found following the call of God was greater than he could have imagined, every one of us must be faithful to follow the specific call God has given us. 1. The journey to something greater (1 Kings 19:19-21) a. Start with an unexpected party (vs. 19-20) b. Marked by complete surrender and humble service (v. 21) c. Finding Confidence in God's Call, Judges 6:11-7:18
04/02/2018Gideon is an unlikely Hero in God’s story- so unlikely that it takes a process for him to gain confidence in himself and God’s calling. God’s strength with Gideon is the secret sauce that leads to Gideon’s success as a leader. God is calling each of us to different things- what will be necessary for you to gain confidence that his strength in you will be enough to accomplish what he has asked you to do? 1. 4 - Forgiving Sins, Mark 2:1-12
28/01/2018When some heard that Jesus was teaching in their town, they brought their friend, a paralytic, to him. When there was no room for them to enter the home where Jesus was, they dramatically lowered their friend through the roof. Seeing their faith, he forgave the paralytic’s sins. When those in attendance questioned in their hearts Jesus’ ability to forgive sins, Jesus demonstrates his power by healing the paralytic. 1. The ministry of the word (vs. 1-2) 2. 3 - Early in the Morning, Mark 1:35-45
21/01/2018Even though Jesus was God in the flesh, he still desired to spend time with his father. Rising early in the morning he went to spend time in prayer. When the disciples try to get him to return to Capernaum, Jesus remains committed to his father’s mission and moves on to the next town to preach the gospel. Recognizing our weaknesses, how much more do we need that time alone with our heavenly father? 1. Jesus spent time with the Father (vs. 35-39) a. Intentional (v. 35) b. 1 - The Beginning, Mark 1:1-15
07/01/2018Unlike the other gospels, Mark begins right at the start of Jesus’ public ministry. Even though he himself was without sin, Jesus identifies with the sins of his people and is baptized; the Spirit of God descends upon him and the father confirms his identity. Though tempted, Jesus overcomes sin and begins to preach a message of repentance. 1. The beginning of the gospel (v. 1) a. Foretold by scripture (vs. 2-8) b. Affirmed by God (vs. 9-11) c. A Hope Restored, 1 Kings 19:1-18
31/12/2017The prophet Elijah was despondent. He had just seen God move in power, but his life is threatened instead of responding in faith, he immediately flees – essentially quitting the ministry. Elijah runs to the same mountain where God appeared to Moses and hopes for God to show up in a great display of power again. God shows up. But in ways that are both undeserving and unexpected. God tells Elijah; I am working a plan that you can’t even see yet, you are not alone, live out your hope and trust in me!
