  • Winning the Secret Battle of Ideas, Acts 17:16-34

    02/07/2017

In the Apostle Paul’s Acts 17 sermon at Mars Hill in Athens, he reaches the hearts and minds of his audience by using the non-Christian worldviews of the day as a platform from which to communicate the gospel. Today we find ourselves in a secret battle of ideas in which bad ideas penetrate our hearts and minds like viruses and give us unfulfilling answers in our search for love, healing, purpose, peace, and hope. Like Paul, we can learn to spot the fake worldviews of our day and reignite our passion to know and share the power of Jesus to meet our culture’s deepest needs. 1. • 9 - His Grace Available, Acts 15:1-35

    25/06/2017

As the gospel spread among the Gentiles, there was disagreement as to whether or not they were required to follow all of the Law of Moses. A conference was held in Jerusalem and it was determined that God’s grace was available to all and that no unnecessary restrictions should be placed on anyone. We too are always encouraged to pursue unity, even when we may disagree on minor points. 1. The Question: What does it take to be saved? (vs. 1-5) 2. The Response: We are saved through grace (vs. 6-11) 3. The Judgement: Do not be a stumbling block (vs. 12-21) 4. • 8 - His Cross Heavy, Acts 14:8-28

    18/06/2017

After dramatically healing a crippled man in Lystra, Jews came down from Antioch and Iconium and incited the crowds to turn against Paul. They stoned him and, thinking he was dead, dragged him out of the city. Though he had been severely hurt, Paul was not discouraged and boldly returned to the very cities that had opposed him to encourage the faithful. Finishing their journey, and despite the persecution, they rejoiced in all that God had done. 1. What are you wanting to hear? (vs. 8-13) 2. Who are you serving? (vs. 14-18) 3. Where are you headed? 11/06/2017

When opposition broke out against them, Paul quotes Isaiah 49:6 and turns his attention towards the Gentiles. This would become his pattern, as he would first proclaim the gospel to the Jews and then to the Gentiles. Though the persecution would intensify, they would continue to preach the gospel. When we are faithful to share the gospel, we too should expect fruitfulness and opposition in our work and trust God for the strength to continue. 1. Curiosity & Jealousy (vs. 42-47) 2. • Ordinary People & Extraodinary Power, 2 Cor 4:6-7

    28/05/2017

God is pleased to use our ordinariness to do some extra-ordinary things for his glory. Our ordinariness is made up of complex layers that include various deformities, some of them more obvious than others but these deformities do not define who we are. Our focus should never be on us but the treasure that we carry and how God uses even us for his glory. 21/05/2017

The apostle Paul and Barnabas are sent out on their first missionary journey and they strategically begin in the synagogues of the Jews. As one would expect, the proclamation of the gospel was not well received by all. Paul confronts a magician, Elymas, who opposed them miraculously striking him blind. Seeing what had occurred, even the procounsel believed. Knowing that our proclamation could put us at odds with others cannot deter us from sharing our faith. 1. It is intentional (vs. 1-3) 2. It is global (vs. 4-5) 3. It is opposed (vs. 6-8) 4. • 4 - His Control Absolute, Acts 12:1-25

    14/05/2017

Persecution flares up in earnest in Jerusalem and the apostle James is imprisoned and killed, followed by Peter’s arrest and imprisonment. While it would appear that Herod is in control and able to do as he wishes, God will show that his control is absolute even when it appears that evil prospers. When our faith puts us at odds with the world, we must remember that God remains the Sovereign of the universe and will hold all accountable for their actions. 1. God’s silence (vs. 1-4) 2. God’s rescue (vs. 5-11) 3. Our doubt (vs. 12-17) 4. God’s justice (vs.18-23) 5. • 3 - His People Set Apart, Acts 11:1-30

    07/05/2017

Strict Jewish Christians back in Jerusalem criticize Peter for having associated with one such as Cornelius. Peter gives testimony to what God had done and all fell silent and glorified God. Persecution in Jerusalem had caused a great number of believers to be scattered and a church began in a city called Antioch. It was in this city that the disciples were first called Christians. When a famine was to strike Jerusalem, the new church in Antioch was quick to respond to their need. 1. Peter shares what God is doing (vs. 1-17) a. Peter takes time to explain why (vs. 4-7) b. Peter shares the struggles he has had (vs. 8-10) c. Peter recounts how God has been at work (vs. 11-17) d. Others are inspired (v. 18) 2. God confirms what he is doing (vs. 19-26) 3. 23/04/2017

The apostle Peter begins to minister outside Jerusalem and heals a paralyzed man and raises a woman from the dead. As was often the case in Jesus’ ministry, as people heard of these miraculous acts of God they turned to the Lord. Our God still desires to work through people faithful to follow his direction in their life to seek and save the lost. 1. Seek an opportunity (9:32-33) 2. Expect results (9:34-35) 3. A Final Judgment Exodus 11:1-12:28 At long last, God details for Moses and the Israelites his plan of deliverance. The Lord will give the Israelites favor in the eyes of the Egyptians and they will be relieved to see them go. The Israelites, however, will only be rescued as they are faithfully obedient to the Lord’s instruction. We too are told what we must do in order to be saved. The question becomes, are we faithful? 1. The last night (vs.1-10) 2. A new beginning (12:1-13) 3. An unleavened life (vs. 14-20) 4. While not always visibly apparent, through Christ we have been made distinct from all peoples for we no longer live under the power of death. 1. God Makes a Distinction (vs. 20-32) 2. Though God performs “signs” and even sends three plagues upon the Egyptians, Pharaoh stubbornly refuses to yield. God does not chastise Moses for his doubt but reaffirms his commitment to rescue his people. God’s power is not dependent on our performance, and God often uses those that the world considers weak to highlight that reality. When we step out in faith, we do so not because we have the abilities in and of ourselves but because he who has called us is faithful. 1. God knows (vs. 1-5) 2. God rescues (vs. 6-8) 3.
