“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬This is a beautiful promise that God will bless us when we honor Him with our finances. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬This is a pretty simple idea, and a hard thing to live out. Especially within the Church. Paul tells his readers that having special spiritual gifts is good, but only if they’re used in love. And Jesus is the ultimate example of this. “"Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;”‭‭Romans‬ ‭4:7‬ ‭ESV‬‬Paul is making an argument to the Jewish Christians in Rome, is that their righteous standing before God is not because of their lineage, but because of the grace and mercy extended to them by Jesus.But Paul is using very Jewish legal language about he Law and circumcision to make this argument. Phrases like “under the Law” are taught to mean we are no longer supposed to keep God’s commandments. But the larger context of today’s verse shows a very different story. “Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it.”‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭15:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬Our culture is overwhelmingly focused on wealth, possessions, goals, and achievements. We compare ourselves to others and determine our success or failure based upon how we stack up. But for those of us who follow Jesus, we are to have an upside-down paradigm. Rather than determining our success or failure by goals, possessions, wealth, and other similar measures, we should be willing to give all of that up if God asks us to. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.” - Matthew 18:20Here’s another very familiar, and very misapplied verse. It’s used to encourage us to pray in small groups and to encourage pastors and teachers when attendance isn’t what they hoped it would be. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:13This is one of the most quoted verses in all of the Bible. It’s on t-shirts, bumper stickers, bookmarks, coffee mugs, and countless other inspirational items. People go to it as their personal faith affirmation that proves that every goal and desire they have will be achieved and received because of the promise of this verse. “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” - Jeremiah 17:10This verse is the climax of a section of Scripture that God has used over the past decade to challenge me and change my life. The prophet, Jeremiah, is comparing and contrasting the cursed life and the blessed life. And he uses a metaphor or parable in it that powerfully illustrates a Biblical truth. Let’s talk about it! 1 John 2:15-16 - “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life - is not from the Father but is from the world.”Today’s Verse of the Day from YouVersion is a strong warning about the way we view the world. Do we view it through the lens of what we can get from it? Or do we view the world through the lens of what we can give back to it?
