Money is How We Keep Score
27/10/2024 Duración: 45minMoney has this quiet way of shaping our sense of self — whispering that security lies in what we own or earn. Caught in its current, we strive for more, measuring ourselves by what we have or haven’t yet achieved. But what if there was an approach to money that released us from the pressures of comparison and sense of never having enough? The Secret (To Identity) Has Been Revealed
20/10/2024 Duración: 44minThe half-truth in today’s sermon is “Identity is a secret puzzle.” On one level, life does require some exploration so you can understand what makes you uniquely recognizable. On another level, to build a life in this manner results in ever-fluid, ever-unstable, and ever-changing “you”. Is that our best option? Or is there a grander story that we are a part of, where identity isn’t achieved but received, where we’re not adrift but secure? Reflection Do you believe in a transcendent God? Do you believe in the immanent Christ?Paragraph Description Half Truths Cor Chmieleski Hope Community Church - Downtown Minneapolis Download Message Slides For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com.

Suffering is (Not) Meaningless | Daniel 3:15-29
29/09/2024 Duración: 46minSuffering can feel meaningless. To cope, we take our cues from culture or our own best thinking. We treat God as an accomplice, someone who is to act in accordance with our wishes for happiness. It is folly. Instead we need to trust God as God and the Cross, which shows how God can transform the worst suffering into the greatest salvation. Reflection: Do you ever wonder if God is going to “get it right”? Do you believe in God that one day everything that is sad will come untrue? The (Enemy) Love of God
15/09/2024 Duración: 40minWe are accustomed to loving those who love us and agreeing with those who are agreeable. What about loving those who disagree with or even hate us? That’s far less common. But the story of God shows a love for enemy. This is outlandish when set beside one of our current cultural half-truths—To love me, you must agree with me. How does the love of Christ speak a better word to us? Listen to find out! Reflection Amidst this noisy world of half-truths, are you hearing the clear love of Jesus for you? Dark Am I, But Lovely | Song of Solomon 1:5
01/09/2024 Duración: 44minMartin Luther in the 16th Century coined a latin phrase that has changed the way many people think of themselves. The phrase is Simul Justus et Peccator – “Simultaneously Saint and Sinner”. In other words, even though we are a sinful people, we are also deeply, deeply loved by God, so much so that he sent Jesus Christ to die for us. We see this even in the Old Testament passage we are studying this week – Song of Solomon 1:5. Everything is Accelerating | Psalm 46:10
25/08/2024 Duración: 43minThe theory of social acceleration explains how the pace of modern life continues to speed up, often leaving us feeling overwhelmed, empty, and disconnected. Within the relentless rush and constant itch to keep up, we’re given a seemingly absurd command to be still and rest in God. What does it mean to be still in an accelerating world and how do we hear the gentle whisper of God in a world full of constant demands? Life is a Wilderness | Psalm 81
18/08/2024 Duración: 45minThis psalm remembers God’s divine intervention in the wilderness so his people might live. The wilderness, or desert, cannot support human life. Similarly, this world in which we live cannot fulfill our deepest longings. So just like God’s people needed divine intervention, we too need divine intervention. It comes in the form of a struck rock (Christ!) who gives us life-giving water for our souls. Reflection How have you mistakenly sought satisfaction in this desert life for your deepest needs? Are you hearing God that you might be saved and satisfied through his life-giving rock? How to Develop a Demanding Spirit | Job 4-37
11/08/2024 Duración: 42minOur suffering can be fertile ground for God to transform us, or it can also lead to incredible bitterness of soul, or something Dr. Larry Crabb has called a “demanding spirit”. This week we will talk about how Job developed a demanding spirit and how the gospel sets us free not to live a life of this dark bitterness. Jesus Protects Us From the Scary Stuff | Psalm 77
28/07/2024 Duración: 44minIn the hit movie Inside Out 2, we follow the life of Riley, a teenager in the throes of puberty. As she navigates life, we observe her internal processing through personified emotions like Joy, Sadness, and Anger. One such emotion, Anxiety, floods Riley’s mind with all the scary stuff that could happen. In one scene, this results in Riley experiecning a full-blown panic attack. If you’ve ever battled anxiety or cried aloud to the Lord amidst despair, this message on Psalm 77 is for you. Reflection The exodus of Jesus is proclaimed to provide you hope amidst your trouble. Should you find your soul refusing to be comforted, how will you remember that it is Jesus’s job to protect you from the scary stuff you can’t see? Through his exodus (i.e. death and resurrection), he has planned for your future. Jesus Sleeps…and Awakes as Our Better King | Psalm 3
14/07/2024 Duración: 49minReading poetry can be difficult. When that poetry alludes to future events, it can be even more vexing. Yet the New Testament quotes the Psalms more than any other Old Testament book. So we seek to understand how these poetic songs foreshadow the coming of Christ and fill us with hope amidst our struggles. Questions: Do you see the limitations of viewing God’s Word as simply an example to imitate or a law to follow? Is Jesus in his sleeping (i.e. death) and his waking again (i.e. resurrection) your hope when feeling under attack? Is Jesus more precious to you today as the True and Better King? Psalm 119
07/07/2024 Duración: 44minQuestions Do you view God’s written word as a burden or as a gift that can be studied to better understand God and the love that he has for you? Have you surrendered your life to the only one who perfectly lived out the law and died on the cross so you could be saved? Forsaken to Become Our King | Psalm 10
23/06/2024 Duración: 43minWhat gives inspiration to the Psalms? Is it David? Is it us? Now that the veil (2 Cor. 3:13–16) has been lifted, how might we read these texts with the clarity that Christ provides? In so doing, we see it’s not just David or we who at times feel forsaken, but Jesus who has been utterly forsaken for our sake. He has not hidden himself in times of trouble but bore the full weight of it, not our sin in part, but the whole! Questions How does this psalm sing God’s grace over us? Just Getting Started | Romans 16
16/06/2024 Duración: 43minThis is our last sermon dedicated to the book of Romans. Rather than see this as a type of finish line, might we instead see how God is just getting started. May this gospel message be imprinted deeper upon our hearts. May our church live by faith in Jesus Christ. May we stand justified by his grace as a gift. May we believe that what God has done he will continue to do. In other words, God’s not done with us; he’s just getting started! For all of this and more, we give God all the glory! Questions: Might we give thanks to God, even today, for this wonderful book? Might we ascribe all glory to him alone?
