Taylor Swift and Drake both wrote songs at high moments in their careers about how God helps those who help themselves. This may sound like good news when things are going your way, but when the rest of life happens, we need something far stronger than our ability to make good choices. Often in a mobster movie, we will hear the crime boss say to a person who has betrayed them, “You’re dead to me!” From that point on in the movie, they become persona non grata, which is Latin for “a person who is unacceptable or unwelcome”. If anyone reads the Scripture carefully, they will find some word, some hidden treasure in the field, which is Christ.” These words are from the 2nd Century and they reflect God’s own idea that the whole Bible is about Jesus and discovering all that the cross accomplishes. Paul’s ”twist” to the story Deuteronomy 30:14 (TiPCFGCTTGOGRTOTV) 14But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it realize there is no possible way you can do it (Rom 1, 2). And yet, the law requires perfection (Rom 3:23). So we are in deep, deep doo-doo (Rom 3:19-20). But wait! Along comes someone who did do the law perfectly (Rom 10:4, Matthew 5:17), and is willing to switch places with us (Rom 3:21ff) through his death and resurrection (Rom 3:25), offering his righteousness (Rom 3:22) to all who simply trust him and not ourselves as Savior (Rom 3:27) and are united to him (Rom 7:1-4). What is underneath the universal longing to be enough?
