Often in a mobster movie, we will hear the crime boss say to a person who has betrayed them, “You’re dead to me!” From that point on in the movie, they become persona non grata, which is Latin for “a person who is unacceptable or unwelcome”. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it realize there is no possible way you can do it (Rom 1, 2). And yet, the law requires perfection (Rom 3:23). So we are in deep, deep doo-doo (Rom 3:19-20). But wait! Along comes someone who did do the law perfectly (Rom 10:4, Matthew 5:17), and is willing to switch places with us (Rom 3:21ff) through his death and resurrection (Rom 3:25), offering his righteousness (Rom 3:22) to all who simply trust him and not ourselves as Savior (Rom 3:27) and are united to him (Rom 7:1-4). So, the only real question is: Do you receive Him (Rom 5:9-13)? Where do you turn when life lowers you to the end of your rope? In the second half of Romans 7, we discover a pathway to communing with God that looks less like climbing and more like seeing life as it actually is, and ourselves as those who struggle and stumble. This means Jesus isn’t away and unaware of the dark and scary places of your life that feel like death (strained relationships, losing a job, receiving critical feedback, a bad diagnosis, etc.) but already there working with a power greater than we could ever engineer. In The Greatest Showman the song Never Enough repeats how the world’s lights and stars and gold will never be enough. In this passage the law of God repeats how our best efforts will never be enough. To live by the law requires absolute perfection. Good news comes when we realize only Jesus has lived with absolute perfection and hushed the Law’s loud thunder. He is more than enough for us!
