We all want our prayers answered, and that’s exactly what we’ve been discussing: How to pray and get what we pray for. The only kind of prayer that is acceptable to God is one that is directed by the Holy Spirit, for we do not know how to pray as we should.

It does no good to pray if you have anything against anybody. First reconcile with your spouse, your sibling, your boss or your child. Then come to God with a clear conscience, and your prayers will not be hindered.

God does not see as a man sees, but God looks at the heart. What is your motive? God is interested in that aspect of you. So we will begin by finding out that there is only one right motive for praying…

God wants us to pray and get what we pray for, but there are requirements we must fulfill as we approach God in prayer. Today we are going to learn about an element of successful praying, but in two aspects—the negative and the positive.

When you pray it is necessary to first give thanks—for all that God has done and all that He is going to do. The more you worship and praise and thank Him, the more you’ll believe He is able to meet your current needs.

Jesus stated this Himself: “If you ask anything in My name” and “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father might be glorified in the Son.” Who would want to bypass Him in the face of such promises? Jesus has done it all on our behalf.

What an encouraging message this is! Learn that when we approach God in prayer, we must come to God in faith. Not a doctrinal kind of faith, not theology, but faith in God’s faithfulness, in His character, in His reliability.

Let Jesus be your example as you say to the Lord, like Jesus, “Not my will, but Yours, be done.” Be willing to renounce your own will, putting down your rebellious ways.

Few people are prepared for the death of a loved one. A couple could live together for many years and yet not be prepared when God calls one of them home. That is unrealistic because God is going to take one home. And don't forget: caskets come in all sizes. After the death of Jesus, while His body lay in the tomb, His soul descended into Hades and, as a result, certain important and permanent changes took place. The death and resurrection of Jesus was cosmic in its effects. It produced results that affected the entire universe from that time forward.
