Using examples from the lives of Moses, Elijah and Jeremiah, Derek illustrates how God picked the time and the place to meet with them. It behooves us to get away to a place of quiet stillness so we can focus wholly on hearing from God. Often God speaks in a gentle whisper.

Derek gets very practical today, as he points out four requirements for hearing God’s voice. To determine these points, he turns to the book of Proverbs to bring out undivided attention, humility, open-ended time and quietness. What can you learn from these steps?

Cultivating a sensitive heart means having our hearts in tune with God’s voice—hearing and paying attention to Him. Derek explains that’s the real key to true blessing. Solomon prayed, “Give me a hearing heart.” Make that prayer your own.

When tempted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus said, “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” So true. Our daily bread is to hear the voice of God and to obey His instructions. It is our personal relationship with Him that will set us apart.

Many people struggle to find faith—they run to and fro trying to find it. They haven’t yet discovered the secret of faith. Faith comes by hearing God’s voice. If you don’t have faith, you can get it. Faith can be cultivated. Listen to find out how faith comes.

Yesterday Derek focused on the Old Testament to bring out the all-important feature: that we need to listen to the voice of God. Today, he turns on to the teaching of Jesus in the New Testament, to help us see that nothing has changed in this vital, essential respect of hearing the voice of the Lord. Other things may have changed, but this essential requirement remains unchanged.

The ability to hear God’s voice sets God’s people apart from all others. But “how do we know it’s Him we’re hearing?” Find out as Derek begins explaining in-depth answers to that question. Rest assured, “Hearing God’s Voice” makes all the difference in life.

Jesus tells us the story about the son who turned his back on his father and home, took his inheritance, left his home and went out to waste it all. But did he find happiness and fulfillment? Quite the opposite. But repentance brought him back to his father’s loving arms.

God tells “all people everywhere to repent.” If that’s so, we need to listen instead of arguing with God. We need to repent of such “blind spots” as unforgiveness, which God calls “wickedness.” Another blind spot could be called sins of omission—those acts we know are the right things to do, yet have failed to accomplish.

Repentance must come first—before forgiveness of sins, before believing the good news of the gospel, and before water baptism. In fact, God commands all people everywhere to repent. Repentance is an inward decision followed by an outward change of life.

“We all, like sheep, have gone astray”—that’s why we all need to repent. We did not all commit murder or become drunk or committed adultery. But one thing we have in common: we all have gone our own way. For this we need to repent.

Repentance is an experience which we cannot get around and for which there is no substitute. And yet for all that, it’s an experience which is not understood by most people today and which is seldom explained by most preachers. Listen to Derek’s explanation today.

In his closing talk on forgiveness today, Derek points out that forgiveness is not an emotion, but rather a decision. We can decide to forgive. First, by recognizing our need to forgive. Second, by submitting ourselves to God’s Word. Then by making the right decision. Affirm it verbally—over and over if necessary. Forgive, as you want God to forgive you.

It is necessary that we forgive one another, for Jesus said that if we don’t forgive then our heavenly Father will not forgive either. If we forgive others, God will forgive us in the same proportion. Derek then brings in the parable of the unforgiving servant to prove this point. Doesn’t it pay to forgive others of their debt to us?

Reconciliation with God also brings reconciliation with our fellow man. In Colossians Paul assures us that now there is neither slave nor free, circumcised or uncircumcised, or barbarian, but Christ is all, and is in all. All barriers have been done away with in the new creation in Jesus.

Scripture tells us that the Lord laid upon Jesus the iniquity of us all. What type of sin? Murder? Fornication? Maybe not. But we all have turned to our own way—we have been self-pleasers, living by our own standards. We need God’s forgiveness. And once forgiven, God tells us they are remembered no more.
