  • Embodying Virtue With John Vervaeke And Nick Winkelman | EMP Podcast 72

    12/04/2021 Duración: 02h10min

There are times I am a bit shocked by the wonderful connections that I have been blessed to facilitate through my work and the EMP podcast. The friendship that’s formed between John and Nick is one of the strange and wonderful connections. If you have been following the podcast you’ll definitely be familiar with John Vervaeke Director of Cognitive Science at the University of Toronto, author of Zombies in Western Culture and creator of the YouTube series Awakening from the Meaning Crisis, who has become one of my primary mentors. Nick Winkelman is back for his second appearance and is another of my favorite thinkers, the Author of the Language of Coaching, Director of Science and Performance for Irish Rugby and former Director of Athlete Preparation for the NFL combine at Exos. I introduced Nick to John’s work during our first interview in May of last year. Since then Nick and John have formed a friendship and ongoing dialogue of their own— one that resonates deeply with the central themes of Evolve M

  • How To Cue A Kangaroo With Joel Smith | EMP Podcast 71

    05/04/2021 Duración: 01h44min

Hey guys this week our guest on the podcast is strength and performance expert and fellow podcast host Joel Smith. Joel is a self declared Kangaroo and, like myself, a geek about the art of cueing and communicating with Athletes. The last 3 weeks have had heavy emphasis on meaning and spirituality with some challenging material. It’s fun to return to the more familiar ground of how we get athletes to run faster, jump higher, and be all around more adaptable. Joel’s Just Fly Performance Podcast (link below) is one of my two favorites in the strength and performance arena. He has collected an incredible set of guests and has synthesized this wide array of thinkers concepts in distinct and insightful ways throughout his work as collegiate strength and conditioning coach and author. Joel has a lot to share when it comes to how we build the most adaptable athletes possible. I had a great time talking with him, and I hope you will all enjoy this conversation as much as I did. ============ Learn More about

  • Modernity, Christianity and Meaning With Paul Vander Klay | EMP Podcast 70

    29/03/2021 Duración: 02h15min

On this podcast we have dug deeply into the topic of meaning and recent episodes have had a strong focus on spirituality. This however will be the first time we are dealing really directly with Christianity. One might reasonably ask why a podcast formed to talk about movement practice and the science connected to it is featuring a Christian reformed church pastor? Over the years though what we have discovered is that fundamentally we believe the purpose of movement practice is the cultivation of a meaningful life and the development of personal and communal virtue. John Vervaeke, the podcast's most recurrent guest and one of my close friends and mentor has gone so far as to joke that what we have built is a church. I demur from that label, because I fear the dogmatism that can be attached and taking on a scope that is inappropriate. Still I am increasingly convinced that the function the church has played for individuals and communities needs to be recaptured. To do that I believe we in the west need t

  • Yoga, Parkour And The Love Based Practice With Jeppe Skovgaard | EMP Podcast 69

    22/03/2021 Duración: 01h49min

Hello and welcome back to the Evolve Move Play Podcast! This week our guest is Jeppe Skovgaard, a long time parkour practitioner, yogi, and the founder of Rört, a mixed-modality movement facility in Copenhagen. Jeppe’s story has a lot of similarities to my own, we both spent the early part of our careers demanding too much of our bodies to the point that we experienced some serious repercussions. Thankfully we both took our experiences as a cue that we needed to change the way we approach our practice and our health. For Jeppe, yoga was the answer, so we go into his experience with parkour and yoga and what he's learned in the interaction between those things. We also talk a lot about the need to balance yin and yang, and the idea that movement can give us something much more deeply meaningful than just external performance. So I think if you are interested in the themes of spirituality that have been coming up in the last few episodes, this will be a really good one for you. There's no mysticism, but

  • Meaning, Spirituality & Holistic Health with Paul Chek | Part 2 | EMP Podcast Episode 68

    15/03/2021 Duración: 01h15min

If you missed the first half of our conversation with Paul, go and give that a listen first! This half of the conversation centers around our perspectives on meaning, spirituality and how they interact with health and fitness. Paul is one of the first people in the fitness industry to really start a deeper conversation around how our physical practices can impact how we experience well being in the world. However, there's also an interesting dynamic to our conversation because we do have some differences in opinion and various tensions in how we see things. I think we explore those differences in a really constructive and interesting way and I’m sure this conversation will serve as a solid foundation for further discussions moving forward. If you are a person who has spent time trying to understand the process of integrating meaning and spirituality into your physical practices, this will be a rich and fruitful conversation for you to check out. Remember to hit the thumbs up, subscribe if you aren’

  • What Is Holistic Health With Paul Chek | Part 1 | EMP Podcast 67

    08/03/2021 Duración: 01h25min

The body is not a machine, and the brain is not a computer. Hey everyone, welcome back to the Evolve Move Play Podcast. This week my guest is Paul Chek, a world-renowned expert in the fields of corrective and high-performance exercise kinesiology, stress management and holistic wellness. Over the last three decades Paul has been an incredible force for reconnecting people to the beautiful, complex ecology that is human health as well as helping many of the world's top athletes overcome otherwise career-ending injuries and reclaim their ability to sustain their practice. In the first half of our two part episode we’ll take a look at how the modern conventional fitness paradigm is optimized more for selling products than actually helping people achieve lasting health and wellness and what people can do to begin taking steps towards a better system. We’ll also discuss the difference between knowledge and wisdom, the importance of skin in the game, and how to determine whether a coach is worth their sa

  • Moana, Jordan Peterson And The Divine Feminine With Chloe Valdary | EMP Podcast 66

    01/03/2021 Duración: 01h01min

Welcome back to another episode of the Evolve Move Play podcast! This week my guest is Chloe Valdary, a public intellectual and writer who has been published by the Atlantic, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Chloe is the founder of Theory of Enchantment which helps businesses fight racism systematically by combining the teaching of Dr. Martin Luther King with developmental psychology and pop culture materials. Through her work she aims to help others develop their understanding of social emotional learning and improve their ability to take care of each other. The three fundamental principles of her method around conflict resolution are: 1) Treat people as individuals, not political abstractions. 2) Criticize to uplift and inspire, never to tear down and destroy. 3) Root everything you do in love and compassion. I really loved the way that she brings these things together in her work in promoting the idea of Agapic love and how we can change our ways of thinking to improve our connectio
