Churches with a long history like ours can believe that their best days are behind them, however, we need to anticipate instead that our best years are ahead of us. In the Celebration Sunday sermon, Symon uses 2 Samuel 5 to show that while the story is of David's inauguration as king, it points forward to Jesus who is the ultimate King, who has given us authority to proclaim his name.

Evan continues our series in 2 Samuel, when David is finally appointed as king over Israel. David took no short cuts to receive the crown, and Evan reminds us that we're to wait for God's leading and timing.

While David didn't take short cuts to get to becoming king, the intervening years between Saul's death and David's inauguration as king were messy. While the main players in the story appear to be Abner, Ish-Bosheth, Joab & David, the real story is of God and His story of redemption.

The chapters we’re going to look at over the next 6 weeks are going to be helpful to lead us towards Christmas because 2 Samuel is a mirror in which we see Jesus.When David is strong and faithful and victorious, he prefigures the strength and faithfulness and victory of Jesus. When David is selfish and faithless, we feel the need for a better king – the kind we see in Jesus. And sometimes, when David is weak and beset by troubles, we see the suffering of Jesus, the Good Shepherd who died for his people.
