Faith is not a feeling. Faith is knowing. Faith is Christ as our confidence, Christ's word as our conviction, and Christ's conquering as our conquering. Conquering by faith may mean losing by sight. But we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen because faith is the evidence - the steadfast assurance - of things not seen.

How does the gift of leadership given by the Holy Spirit in the context of His church differ from the natural abilities of leadership in the world? Who are the leaders within a local church? What characterizes the leaders within a local church that makes them easily identifiable by the church?

We are bound captives to our Master, the Lord Jesus Christ, who impoverished Himself to make us rich. We demonstrate that we are captivated by Jesus when we become bound to the service of others in obedience to our Lord's command.

There is to be progress in the Christian life, from infancy to maturity. The Apostle Paul uses language throughout his letter to the Ephesians centered in the words "grow up." What does progress in the Christian life look like?

In today's study of the Spiritual Gifts, we consider the Apostle Paul's precaution regarding tongues as a "private prayer language" and the true purpose of tongues which is missions.

Paul writes to the Church at Corinth to correct their misunderstanding of the use of the gift of tongues in the church. Tongues caused division and confusion in Corinth, and causes just as much confusion and division in today's church. Have tongues ceased? If so, why - since all of the other gifts haven't? If not, how are we to exercise this gift in the church today? PART ONE OF TWO PARTS

God is Sovereign over the nations, and out of the nations He has called a people for Himself, having redeemed them by the blood of the slain Lamb. Because God's redeemed people are exiles in the secular nations in which they live, there is political and spiritual tension. What does Scripture say about how God's redeemed and holy nation is to comport itself while living as exiles in the ungodly nation of the world?

From the beginning of Psalm 51 through verse 15, David runs the gamut of the Levitical sacrificial system seeking atonement for his sin. By verse 16 he is completely exasperated with the Law's ability to give him any peace. He concludes that it isn't the Levitical sacrifices that God desires, but the sacrifices of righteousness which come from a heart of gratitude and thankfulness for God's mercy.

In seeking the restoration of the joy of his own salvation, David desires the conversion - the restoration - of all transgressors to God through the liberality of God's gracious Spirit.

It is God who has been offended by David's sin; it is David who owes God a debt he cannot pay. And yet he asks for God to restore to him. What specifically is David asking when he prays, "Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation"? The answer lies in an examination of his final words on his death bed in 2 Samuel 22 and 23.

Sin disorients us from God's law and disorders God's design for our fellowship with God, our worship of the one true God, our rule and maintenance of God's creation, and disfigures the image of God in which we were created. The reordering of this disorder requires - not reform - but a completely new creation "out of nothing."

Can a believer who has sinned, and lives with the guilt of their sin, lose their salvation? What does David mean when he asks God to not cast him away from His presence and not to take His Holy Spirit from him?

When David asks for his transgressions to be blotted out, he's not asking God to merely cover over his sins with white out. As we see David's understanding of God's wrath against sin as it is revealed in the Old Testament, what David is asking for is violent mercy to obliterate his sin rather than himself.

David is overwhelmed by the reality of the defilement that has resulted from his sin with Bathsheba. With a view toward the procedures God outlined for ceremonial cleansing in Leviticus and Numbers, David goes to the extreme and asks God for a remedy to match the intensity of his guilt: repeated, multiple washings. But only one thing is needful.

David calls upon all in the great congregation who have benefited from God's salvation to join him in glad adoration of the Lord. Of whom does this great congregation consist? Not the righteous - but poor and needy sinners who are the recipients of God's grace in Christ.

How does Jesus preach in the great congregation? What is the message that He is declaring? And who is included in the great congregation?

My innumerable sins require God's innumerable thoughts toward me in devising the plan to rescue me from a pit of horror.

God is not unaware of your plight in times of despair. Nor is God deaf to your cries to Him, even as you wait anxiously for His response.

The first person singular in Psalm 40 ("I", "me", "my") is in reality the voice of Jesus. Every word spoken in this Psalm is spoken by and is in reference to the person of Jesus Christ in his own going down into death and being lifted up out of the horrible pit of hell and the grave. When he says in verses 3: "many shall see and fear and shall trust in the Lord," what are they seeing, what are they fearing, and what are they trusting? John 9 and Isaiah 6 hold the answers.

James tells us that the "tongue is a world of iniquity, set on fire of hell." In 1 John 1:1-2:3, the Apostle John reveals the progression of sin's deceitfulness: from hypocrisy, to duplicity, to apostasy. This progression is on display as our tongues reveal our hearts in what we say.
