52 Week Film Project

Whilst preparing for our Week 26 spectacular, Jake and Will take the time to watch the new Grinch movie in our first BONUS EPISODE. This week Jake and Will review Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Widows. We discuss Cynthia Erivo, Zoe Kravitz and Daniel Kaluuya's powerful performances, question several dodgy accents and ask ourselves which (if either) of the films lived up to our expectations. This week on the 52 Week Film Project Jake and Will saw our second Odeon Screen Unseen, and I am delighted to reveal that the film we will be reviewing this week is THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN. We both wonder at the eagerly anticipated final swan song of actor/director Robert Redford, talk about the film's resistance to the tropes associated with a romance movie, and compare Casey Affleck's work to that of his big brother Ben. But before all that, we have an array of fascinating news stories for you this week. We talk about the new Breaking Bad movie, the Shrek franchise reboot and a new Grant Morrison comic book tv series that is set to make 'Happy!' look positively normal. This week Jake and Will go on tour and record in The Pod in White City. We convene to discuss probably the most critically and commercial lauded film of the last 10 months, A Star is Born, and one of the worst rated superhero flicks to date, Venom. Before this, we dive into the news. We discuss Jon Favreau's new series the Mandalorian, ask if there is a need for the new Lilo and Stitch live-action movie, and wonder at what age we would see a Kanye West film, marketed to our generation in a Rocketman/Bohemian Rhapsody-esque way. This week, Jake and Will shake things up by reviewing Cary Joji Fukunaga's critically lauded Netflix series, Maniac. We start of by discussing the series' cinematography and setting, ruminating on the potential for future spin-offs in this cassette futuristic world. What is more, we relive our favourite comedic moments, including Justin Theroux's wacky yet wonderful acting choices and the relationship between Snorri and his unlikely friend, the orange and blue plumaged alien Ernie. As well as a whole season of television to discuss, we also dive back into the news. We dissect the trailers for both Dark Phoenix and Vice, as well as speculate about the setting, release and commercialisation of the leaked 'Potterverse' video game.

Better late than never! On our jam-packed 16th episode, we discuss the shows we are heading to at next months London Film Festival, Captain Marvel, Doctor Who, Mary Poppins Returns, Bond 25 and yes, we have another Joaquin Phoenix Joker update! Our film of the week is Shane Black's latest action epic 'The Predator'.

This week, Will and Jake discuss their recent trip to the London Podcast Festival, the late Burt Reynold's career highlight as a "sperm switchboard chief" and Will delivers his best Mark Kermode impression in the form of a 5-minute Yardie review. In a week full to the brim of television, film and video game news, we discuss our excitement about the new season of True Detective, and fanboy about the release of a new Marvel podcast.

This week, Jake and Will went to see a mystery film at Odeon's Screen Unseen and we are delighted to announce that this weeks (spoiler free) review will be on AMERICAN ANIMALS. We discuss how the film tugged at our heart strings, the importance of its docu-drama style and how Evan Peters might just be the new Johnny Depp. But before that, we dive into this weeks news. We discuss the importance of the rule changes on rotten tomatoes as well as how Alec Baldwin, in his last few films, is being marketed in the same way as Samuel L Jackson.

This week, Jake and Will finally talk about the blockbuster they have been waiting for all summer, THE MEG. We ruminate on any future sequels (with help from its hilarious book titles) and marvel at how Jason Statham saves the day without so much as breaking a sweat! But before this, we return to our longest and most in depth news segment to date. We discuss the film industries relationship with social media, geek out about Simon Pegg’s Slaughterhouse Rulez and ponder on the effects of The Oscars newest award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film’.
