We run through the prep work leading up to the test and each series and how each dog handled it (the good and the bad). The few weeks out west were enjoyable, humbling and exciting. Tonight we enjoy speaking with a repeat guest and friend, Grayson Guyer from Lost Highway Kennels. Our show gets pretty deep and discusses human connections and how that connection works with dogs, too. We catch up with Grayson and hear about his upcoming plans for the NAVHDA Invite and how his feelings match Bob's with Master Stashionals '21. Grayson gets into some info about snake breaking dogs and how he has been helping people keep their dogs safe... stay tuned for more seminars on that from him... A few weeks back, a true dog man (KD Mathews) came to hang out and share some stories. KD lives down in sunny Florida and has been in the dog training business for the past 30 years and the reason is because he asks questions. Then he asks more. He asks the owners questions and in turn, teaches the owners about their dogs before really even teaching the dogs. Then ya know, he teaches the dogs, too. We dig into some leadership with dogs & people and surprise: coaching people and coaching dogs can be eerily similar. KD provides a phenomenal analogy that really hits home, especially since we all refer to ol' Lone D as Uncle Bob. Then we finish up chatting about bite work with dogs, the importance of a "denial" and how dogs never forget things, we just try to bury those memories deep, deep down below tons of positive reps. Today's show was certainly a special one. We had the pleasure of speaking with 1st Lt. Amber English... but you might know her more as the bad to the bone wingshooter with nerves of steel who earned the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Amber has been competing for years and is currently shooting on the AMU team in the United States Army, so she has the coolest job ever. We learn about her time in Tokyo, the food she has eaten while traveling, her hunting plans for the fall and a ton more. Amber also shares some advice she's heard from coaches and she even offers some tips to help us become better shooters...we'll see how it goes. We had a good hanging out with Clark Kennington. He is truly one of the greats. We chatted through the hunt test he ran up here in NY and ran through the good and bad from it. Doug lives out in Michigan and that lucky dog happens to live in some prime bird hunting area (I'm not jealous or anything, it's fine). Anyway, we have a great time talking about how Doug got started working with dogs, new products from his dog supply company, a contest Doug is putting together for amateur trainers, Dogtra products he likes and possibly my favorite part of the conversation... we talk about fire breathing, pumped up, high drive dogs and how to handle them. Doug happens to own a fire breather and he and Bob talk a lot about obedience, ways to work with those kinds of dogs, lessons learned from k9 handlers, etc. We'll have to have Doug back on the show sometime because 1. he's the man and 2. we had a great conversation and I want to hear more about some grouse action. Our good buddy Adam Campbell is back on our show to talk dogs and catch up. Since we've last seen him, he and another buddy of ours, Jimmy Rodgers, have created an awesome podcast called The Dog House with Adam and Jimmy. If you're a fan of our show, then you'd enjoy theirs. Tonight's show was a great time and we tried something new: recording during a live stream with our friends on patreon. We hung out and answered some of their questions and were able to interact quite a bit, so we had a really good time and appreciate those who could make it. We catch up with Oliver and get his thoughts on a few specific training scenarios. This was a fun one, I think you'll enjoy it. Welp, we've had a couple weeks of chaos with a whole lot of traveling for hunt tests and long days training dogs but we're back and ready to share a few lessons learned. This week, we're hosting Oliver & Andrew from Foundation Retrievers and getting in a lot of good training. Bob and Oliver recap the past few weeks of hunt tests with the dogs, how they performed, where things went wrong and how they're busting butt to problem solve and earn passes. I feel like our show is usually pretty passionate. We put a lot of time and energy into Lone Duck Kennels and you can't help but get worked up talking about the wins and losses because of all the "investment" you put into this kind of work. Well, I think you'll feel the passion in tonight's show as Bob and Oliver dig into training advice and go back and forth with each other. We've had a lot of people ask questions about mini t, t pattern, how do you get a dog to sit on a whistle, why does my dog loopy sit, etc., so tonight, we're tackling all of it. Bob and I catch up a little but we dig right into the meat of the show and try to thoroughly explain the process from start to finish and when to notice triggers along the way. These "triggers" are little things to watch for to know when your dog is ready for the next step in the process. We also answer a few other questions that came through Instagram (@loneduck) about breeding, how to choose parents, how to choose breeders and a whole lot more. Mike is a super knowledgeable guy whose passion for dogs drives his business forward. Unfortunately, we had some time constraints for this show because we struggle with time zone math but we will be having Mike on the show again because we have a whole lot of bite work to talk about. A couple weeks back, we had the pleasure of trading a few stories with Andrew Beam (@beamcountry). He's an absolutely fantastic guy who works hard, writes great songs and knows his way around a fishing pole.
