  • 114A. Master Stashionals 2021

    23/10/2021 Duración: 01h10min

let's try this again... Our good buddy, Oliver Burman at Foundation Retrievers, joins us to reminisce about the Master National. We run through the prep work leading up to the test and each series and how each dog handled it (the good and the bad). The few weeks out west were enjoyable, humbling and exciting. Cheers to clients, family and friends for supporting Lone Duck. Now let’s get onto hunting season.

  • E 113. Dogs & Human Connections

    09/09/2021 Duración: 01h29min

Tonight we enjoy speaking with a repeat guest and friend, Grayson Guyer from Lost Highway Kennels. Our show gets pretty deep and discusses human connections and how that connection works with dogs, too. We catch up with Grayson and hear about his upcoming plans for the NAVHDA Invite and how his feelings match Bob's with Master Stashionals '21. Grayson gets into some info about snake breaking dogs and how he has been helping people keep their dogs safe... stay tuned for more seminars on that from him... Finally get a little outside Lone D's usual topics to chat about life and the state of things. It's worth a listen and taking time to think.

  • E 112. Dog training: principles vs methods

    20/08/2021 Duración: 01h48min

A few weeks back, a true dog man (KD Mathews) came to hang out and share some stories. KD lives down in sunny Florida and has been in the dog training business for the past 30 years and the reason is because he asks questions. Then he asks more. He asks the owners questions and in turn, teaches the owners about their dogs before really even teaching the dogs. Then ya know, he teaches the dogs, too. We dig into some leadership with dogs & people and surprise: coaching people and coaching dogs can be eerily similar. KD provides a phenomenal analogy that really hits home, especially since we all refer to ol' Lone D as Uncle Bob. Then we finish up chatting about bite work with dogs, the importance of a "denial" and how dogs never forget things, we just try to bury those memories deep, deep down below tons of positive reps. If you enjoyed the show as much as we did, hit up KD and learn more at socraticcanine.com... you'll be pleased you did. Cheers, brotherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • E 111. The US Army's Gold Medalist, Amber English

    10/08/2021 Duración: 41min

Today's show was certainly a special one. We had the pleasure of speaking with 1st Lt. Amber English... but you might know her more as the bad to the bone wingshooter with nerves of steel who earned the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Amber has been competing for years and is currently shooting on the AMU team in the United States Army, so she has the coolest job ever. We learn about her time in Tokyo, the food she has eaten while traveling, her hunting plans for the fall and a ton more. Amber also shares some advice she's heard from coaches and she even offers some tips to help us become better shooters...we'll see how it goes. Hopefully, this isn't the last we hear from Amber because we didn't get to meet her dog, Cotton. Cheers to you, Amber. Learn more about the US Army's Marksmanship Unit here.

  • E 110. "Leave with a ribbon or a lesson" - Clark Kennington

    05/08/2021 Duración: 01h32min

We had a good hanging out with Clark Kennington. He is truly one of the greats. We chatted through the hunt test he ran up here in NY and ran through the good and bad from it. We then dig into some of his philosophy for training dogs and how he's been successful over the years in all sorts of tests. *Also, Shorty's Pub n Grub should be a podcast sponsor....

  • E 109. High Drivin' Soggy Dogs & Free Stuff

    30/07/2021 Duración: 01h06min

Welcome welcome. Tonight's show was with our buddy, Doug, from Soggy Dog Gear. He's an awesome guy who enjoys training dogs and telling tales. Doug lives out in Michigan and that lucky dog happens to live in some prime bird hunting area (I'm not jealous or anything, it's fine). Anyway, we have a great time talking about how Doug got started working with dogs, new products from his dog supply company, a contest Doug is putting together for amateur trainers, Dogtra products he likes and possibly my favorite part of the conversation... we talk about fire breathing, pumped up, high drive dogs and how to handle them. Doug happens to own a fire breather and he and Bob talk a lot about obedience, ways to work with those kinds of dogs, lessons learned from k9 handlers, etc. We'll have to have Doug back on the show sometime because 1. he's the man and 2. we had a great conversation and I want to hear more about some grouse action. • E 108. "Line up your tail, spine & attitude"

    16/07/2021 Duración: 01h34min

Our good buddy Adam Campbell is back on our show to talk dogs and catch up. Since we've last seen him, he and another buddy of ours, Jimmy Rodgers, have created an awesome podcast called The Dog House with Adam and Jimmy. If you're a fan of our show, then you'd enjoy theirs. We talk about Adam's dogs and how hot the weather can be for dog training where he's from. Adam gives some warm weather training tips for people and we dig into how Adam preps his dogs to peak at the right time. Specifically, we talk about peaking for the ol' Master Stashional event. We also pick his brain on some water work questions from a few friends of ours and his answers are awesome. Don't miss out on the dog training advice we get to enjoy in this episode! Cheers!

  • E 107. Does your dog have TONS of giddyup?

    02/07/2021 Duración: 47min

Tonight's episode is one of my favorites so don't miss this. First, I really enjoyed the opener and chatting about the brands we like... I got Bob off topic and he got all flustered. Next, we learn how Bob is doing with the adopting some of Oliver's training techniques (if you're wondering what those might be, check out the previous 2 episodes). We also talk about the most recent hunt test where a bunch of dogs passed their tests and we had a handful of lone duck dogs qualify for the Master Stashional out in Idaho. We also chat with Bob about his training day with the local retriever club and how YOU can get involved with some cool clubs near you. Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose by meeting with a club to see if you'd be a good fit. Finally, and I think I'm going out of order here but that's ok, we hear a lot of frustration from Bob and this is the part I really enjoyed...hear me out on this. We get a lot of people who write in asking questions and we try to help problem solve and dissect the traini

  • E 106. Elite Training Part II (live show)

    25/06/2021 Duración: 01h21min

Tonight's show was a great time and we tried something new: recording during a live stream with our friends on patreon. We hung out and answered some of their questions and were able to interact quite a bit, so we had a really good time and appreciate those who could make it. We catch up with Oliver and get his thoughts on a few specific training scenarios. This was a fun one, I think you'll enjoy it. Be sure to watch for Oliver at Foundation Retrievers... he is one heck of a trainer.

  • E 105. Elite Training with Foundation Retrievers

    18/06/2021 Duración: 01h23min

Welp, we've had a couple weeks of chaos with a whole lot of traveling for hunt tests and long days training dogs but we're back and ready to share a few lessons learned. This week, we're hosting Oliver & Andrew from Foundation Retrievers and getting in a lot of good training. Bob and Oliver recap the past few weeks of hunt tests with the dogs, how they performed, where things went wrong and how they're busting butt to problem solve and earn passes. I feel like our show is usually pretty passionate. We put a lot of time and energy into Lone Duck Kennels and you can't help but get worked up talking about the wins and losses because of all the "investment" you put into this kind of work. Well, I think you'll feel the passion in tonight's show as Bob and Oliver dig into training advice and go back and forth with each other. It's certainly a positive discussion centered around building confident dogs and ways to increase the trust and relationship with your dog, but it's super interesting to hear all the differen

  • E 104. Bob's Instagram Live

    19/05/2021 Duración: 51min

Welcome to Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles... it's another good show this week. Bob and Kevin have a good time chatting with friends during an Instagram live session. • E 103. Deep Dive: Intro to Handling

    12/05/2021 Duración: 01h45min

We've had a lot of people ask questions about mini t, t pattern, how do you get a dog to sit on a whistle, why does my dog loopy sit, etc., so tonight, we're tackling all of it. Bob and I catch up a little but we dig right into the meat of the show and try to thoroughly explain the process from start to finish and when to notice triggers along the way. These "triggers" are little things to watch for to know when your dog is ready for the next step in the process. We also answer a few other questions that came through Instagram (@loneduck) about breeding, how to choose parents, how to choose breeders and a whole lot more. Tonight's show hit a lot of interesting topics. Let us know what you think! Cheers.

  • E 102. Primal Canine Training

    03/05/2021 Duración: 01h11min

Tonight's episode was spent chatting with Mike Jones, the founder and head trainer at Primal Canine out in California. Mike is a super knowledgeable guy whose passion for dogs drives his business forward. We hear about Mike's past and how he got into the dog world, we learn about his business and his unique approach to dog training. Unfortunately, we had some time constraints for this show because we struggle with time zone math but we will be having Mike on the show again because we have a whole lot of bite work to talk about. Mike is the man. If you're interested in learning more about him and his business, check out his website here.

    29/04/2021 Duración: 42min

To celebrate, Bob and Kevin hit the pistol range, trained some dogs, made fried turkey nuggets and chatted about the last couple years of doing the podcast. We made some good plans for how to improve as we continue the show and would greatly appreciate your input on that. Thanks for listening and as always, cheers to you.

This week, we sit down and talk with our good buddy, Lyle Steinman, who just won the Mamba Challenge down at Mossy Pond. We dig into the test, what each series looked like, the fantastic hospitality from the Mossy Pond crew, the dogs Lyle competed with and how they all performed. Thanks to those who sent in questions, we had a really detailed conversation with Lyle and I think you're going to enjoy it. Cheers to 100 more.

In tonight's show, we hear about how Beam took Bob out searching for redfish and a good time. Tonight, Bob and Kevin chat with our good buddy, Lyle Steinman, from Castile Creek Kennels about how his southern trip is going. Like many people, he has been battling the frigid temps in Texas, which is obviously devastating. On a positive note, we chat about some exciting things happening with his business. A lot of people ask about doing southern training trips and what it's like and so we pull back the curtain a little. It's interesting to hear Lyle's perspective. He's also been focusing in and crushing it with his dogs. As always, it's fun to chat with Lyle and hear what he thinks of specific training topics and what's happening in our industry.
