In this episode After Ricky's Badger Patrol leader pulls out at late notice, he and Kate convince Edward to take the boys to the national convention in Chicago. While there, Derek and Ricky hatch a plan to get lucky with some high school cheerleaders. Things that came up in this episode that wouldn’t happen in a sitcom today. Derek walking around a hotel room wearing just a towel and a bathing cap. Ricky saying cheap sex An older girl kissing a preteen boy Kids basically running around unattended at a hotel. S1E22: The X Team Airdate: April 30, 1983 In this episode Kate catches Ricky and his friends watching an X-rated film during a sleepover, and she insists that he tell his father what happened. This episode provides a good message about talking to your teens about one of the most uncomfortable topics out there, sex. I think this episode provided a good leaping off point from here on out as we see Ricky get older and face more difficult challenges down the road. Here is S1E20: The Empire Strikes Out, which aired on February 26, 1983. In this episode Grandfather Stratton offers Kate an executive position in California, hoping that Edward will marry an heiress to expand the family fortune. When Kate finds out, Edward's relationships with both her and his father seem to be over. Also in this episode we get a reappearance by the Tommy the Therapist doll. Who’s diagnosis is for Rick to have a lobotomy after he confesses he’s not depressed anymore and he’s the happiness he’s ever been and his life is perfect. Again, I say, this toy would never be enjoyed by children and is more suitable for therapists as a Christmas gag gift. I love how Ricky manages to get to his grandfather and make him see reason by pulling on the old man’s heartstrings via a photograph of his deceased wife Abigail. S1E18: Junior Businessman Airdate: February 12, 1983 In this episode for a school business club assignment, Edward lets Ricky manage an ice cream parlor for a week, but Ricky discovers that running a business is harder than he expected. Let me ask you this, do you think you would have done a better job running this place for a day than Ricky, when you were 12? This is an ice cream parlor and not once does some order ice cream. There was an order for a ham sandwich than later on someone orders 7 turkey sandwiches which led to the antics of Edward and Ricky getting food all over the place. Derek got fired (no surprise there, any guesses as to why), JT and Lisa quit to go play Donkey Kong, so that left Ricky by himself as a men’s baseball team walks in. In this episode when his school orchestra needs to raise money for a trip to Washington, D.C., Ricky commits Edward to buying 1000 bags of popcorn, without his approval or knowledge - but when Edward declines, Ricky has to sell the popcorn at the mall. At the mall we see many characters that Ricky and Edward try to sell popcorn to one fancy dressed man who looks like Ian McKellan wants a particular bag on popcorn that's located preferably on the bottom of this large cardboard box because he feels it's fresher, thus having Edward toss all the bags on to the floor and practically climbs into the box to get the last remaining bag, to which the guy asks if Edward takes any of the major credit cards as payment. WTH, guy! This is 1983, you're like 15 years to early for this type of thing, like the credit card swiper on the phone app. P

After another run in with the school bully Ox, Ricky finds himself in court in S1E15: Twelve Angry Kids. Airdate: January 15, 1983 In this episode After Ricky gets in a fight with Ox, he and Edward are sued for a false whiplash claim. Leonard and Ricky convince the judge that the case be presented to a jury of peers - other kids. I bet Judge Judy would have thrown out this case immediately. A jury of kids, has this ever happened in human history? I noticed that when both boys are sworn in, that God is never mentioned. I thought that usually comes up at the end of it. Today, I'm talking about S1E14: The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, which aired on January 8, 1983. In this episode after Derek saves Ricky's life, he pressures Ricky to find him a date for a co-ed party. But when Ricky can't find any girls who are willing, he feels obliged to pose as Derek's date. In this episode we also meet some new characters, J.T. and Freddy who are some of Ricky's other friends. To be honest I think J.T. is worse than Derek when it comes to the ladies. J.T. shows the boys his love potion that comes in a moonshine jug and has some sort of soda, possibly alcohol (as he mentions it tastes better if you mix it with Dr. Pepper or some other soda)Tabasco Sauce and a Vitamin E tablet.
