With the year 1968, horror movies changed a bit with the double combo of Night of the Living Dead and Rosemary's Baby. Cinema, in general changed too, with rating systems and new types of moviemakers appearing on the scene. Coppola, Scorsese, Schlesinger, Boorman, Peckinpah, and Leone, just to name a few changed everything. But prior to that golden year, there were fantastic films that still hold up as great achievements, goofy fun, or time capsules to another age. Frank Baum is known as one of the greatest fantasy authors of the twentieth century. His works included what some would call today young adult novels and stories in the same mold as Alice in Wonderland or The Wind in the Willows. His most famous novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, had thirteen sequels and also was the inspiration for the Victor Fleming classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. After numerous attempts to make further adaptations, Disney took up the reigns with a property that in all ways seems to fit with their image. In 2010, the Eli Roth produced film The Last Exorcism was released to strongly positive reviews. Though audiences were mixed in their feelings, the film was an overwhelming success making over $67M USD against a budge of $1.8M. Presenting itself as either a found footage or faux documentary, the film’s greatest strengths were the incredible performances by the actors and actresses involved. The Reverend Cotton Marcus (played by Patrick Fabian) has hired a film crew to document a real life exorcism. The greys or grays are one of the least tapped sources for scares in genre fiction. While vampires and zombies seem to dominate every type of media that exists, the greys, those skinless white aliens known for human abduction, seem to be continuously forgotten. One wonders why since the mythos behind them are vague and easily molded for original stories. Some authors and films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the novels and books of Whitley Strieber have caught the imagination.
