Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. One thing in horror and genre fiction has been humans murdering humans in so many horrible ways. Serial killers, psychopaths, gangsters, government agents, femme fatales, and so many more have been the main perpetrators. Yet, what does this all mean? In many cases it’s human beings hunting other human beings. In definition, horror icons like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers have been hunting humans for the last four decades. But another subgenre of pulp fiction has been where people put man or woman in a situation where it becomes a game to them. The most famous is probably the 1924 novella The Most Dangerous Game written by Richard Connell. A wealthy eccentric on a privately owned island uses an erroneous lighthouse to shipwreck boats. That's right, the state known for Ben Franklin, the Liberty Bell, the top producer of both American chocolate and NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks, and being the land of the Quakers, Amish, and Mennonites, Pennsylvania is also the home of the modern day zombie, specifically the city of Pittsburgh. Actors, crew, and writers for the George A. Romero zombie films got their start there and since 1968 a large community of fans and filmmakers have made it the zombie capital of the world. One of the first big horror releases of 2013 was the Guillermo Del Toro produced film Mama by first time director Andres Muschietti. Originally a short three minute film, the piece brought Muschietti attention. A thin and horrific creature chased two little girls around a house to great effect. Del Toro saw the film and decided to produce a feature length motion picture based on the short. After two little girls parents die tragically, they are left in a cabin out in the middle of the woods in rural Virginia. Five years later, searchers hired by their uncle and his girlfriend find them as feral and alone. On November 9th, 1984, two horror cult classics opened up head to head, Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street and the controversial Silent Night Deadly Night. After a bunch of sequels, one would think Freddie Krueger would have been the more successful, however, Silent Night Deadly Night beat it at the box office. But with its plot of a crazed killer dressed in a Santa Claus outfit, outrage by religious and parent groups caused a backlash. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert even called it one of the most despicable films in history. Due to the uproar, the film was pulled from theaters, yet years later it has become one of the most beloved slasher films of all time. Some films have meaning in their stories that are much harder to ascertain. Hidden connotations, symbolism, and interpretation are part of what make the story unique. Lovely Molly, a 2012 film by director Ed Sanchez, is specifically that. Sanchez, best known as one of the co-directors of the Blair Witch Project, has made a new genre film that specifically leaves the viewer asking questions as they are engulfed in a tale of horrific gloom. This year, horror films playing the convention circuit were shown plus art work of fantasy artists and a demonstration of a new role playing game. Cohost Philip was able to interview a number of fantastic talents including authors Jon Michael Kelley, Gregory Norris, Michael Bailey, T.G. Arsenault, Jo Lynne Valerie, B.E. Scully, Marianne Halbert, and David Bernstein.
