In “Out of Gas,” after Serenity suffers a catastrophe while on its way to Greenleaf on a mission that leaves her crew with only hours of oxygen, flashbacks show how Mal and Zoë acquired Serenity and assembled their motley band. This episode differs stylistically from the rest of the series in that it tells its story alternately in three timeframes: events in the present, events in the near-past that led to the present, and events in the more distant past that led to the assembly of Serenity's core crew. Out of Gas was the eighth episode of the Firefly TV series and was first aired on Fox, on October 25, 2002. Still one of my favorite movies of all time, for this commentary of THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN I finally have a Harry Potter expert (Simi Climo) to revisit this classic with. While I tackle some of the important film revelations - namely the brilliance of now-Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron and then-teen actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson - Simi brings in lore, mythology, relationships, and more from both books and movies. This film is a masterpiece whether you aren’t a Harry Potter guy like me or are a huge one like Simi. Enjoy, Bizzlers. After we start with about 15 minutes of giddy excitement about cast announcements for EPISODE IX and J.J. Abrams’s brilliant forethought to shoot extra Leia for THE FORCE AWAKENS that we will now see repurposed for the final chapter, we immediately dive head first into Star Wars comics in the Disney “canon” era. We of course spend most of our time on Vader series one and two and especially the magnificent, electric, stereotype-busting, lovably roguish Doctor Aphra and her incredibly unique and downright hilarious relationship with the Dark Lord as well as her own (mis)adventures. The Bizzle read over 3,000 pages of Star Wars comics over the past few weeks (no lie) in preparation for the first of what promises to be an entire mini-series of discussion about what have mostly been good to really good to occasionally excellent comics by Marvel in the Star Wars universe (see: “The Screaming Citadel” with Luke, Aphra, Han, Leia and company). ***Comics talk starts at 17 minutes! Jayne as an accidental local folk hero? We are so in on this. Returning to a planet where he ran into some serious trouble years ago, Jayne discovers that he's become a local folk legend. Mal decides to use this entertaining distraction to complete a job, but some unfinished business may derail his plans. "Jaynestown" was the seventh episode of the Firefly TV series and was first aired on Fox on October 18, 2002. One of the most hilarious episodes of television ever, and of course…. Christina Hendricks. It's Joss's turn in the writer’s chair again as he tackles the first out-and-out comedy episode of Firefly, featuring the witty dialogue he's famous for, along with the most famous curves on television, those of the delightful Hendricks. This was before she was famous, of course, but no less talented, as she plays the mysterious Saffron, a wife Mal managed to pick up in payment for his debts, with innocence, charm and dangerous sexuality, often at the same time. For a movie that was both praised and criticized at it’s time of release in 2006 for being what seemed (on the surface) and anti-Bush retelling of Alan Moore’s classic Reagan-era graphic novel, V FOR VENDETTA actually comes off today prophetically anti-Trump instead. Add in Natalie Portman’s spectacular post-Prequel rebirth and the much more human and less pretentious reading of philosophical themes from THE MATRIX in regards to control vs chaos and the triumph of the human spirit and you have a movie that holds up amazingly well both cinematically and thematically. Join Simi Climo and I as we revisit this classic, produced and written by The Wachowskis as a film that many argue achieved what the Matrix sequels did not. After dealing with Inara's outsider status in the previous episode, it's now the turn of the three new passengers, Simon, River and Book. Joss Whedon himself has mused on the idea that all his shows centre on the creation of family, and this comes into full effect in Safe. The episode starts with a dirty deal gone wrong, resulting in Shepherd Book fighting for his life and River and Simon snatched by some of the planet's inhabitants. When River reads the mind of a mute child, however, she is dubbed a witch and tied to a stake to be burned. The first three episodes of Firefly centered on the underbelly of the show’s universe, and Shindig moves us away from that world and into the glamorous lifestyle of the Alliance-run planets. The class distinction the show has been hinting at from the start is shown here in action, with the basic brutality of Mal's world clashing with the pretense and privilege of Inara's. And it's Inara's show from the beginning, as we follow her on business to the social event of the season, before Mal gets in trouble for a misguided attempt at defending her honor. He must fight his competitor to the death in order to leave with his crew, fighting for Inara's place on Serenity in the process. Matt and I tend to disagree on this episode — I love the humor and the way it sets up the film, “Serenity” — but I actually saw the film first and so it hits me in a way it doesn’t Matt. The series is clearly still finding its footing, but there is excellent world building and one of the most expertly and hilariously edited interrogation scenes of all time, despite the weirdness and out-of-placeness of the Reaver plot. Nevertheless, we see Summer Glau as River Tam really start to develop and become hypnotic as a character and an actor here, and thus it remains essential Firefly viewing (I mean, we only have 14, so….) So Joss Whedon and the entire FIREFLY crew made a fantastic, epic, memorable double-episode pilot…. but Fox, as usual, decided to shoot themselves in the foot and slap everyone else in the face and force Whedon to make another, new, shorter, far inferior pilot, called THE TRAIN JOB. While still a typically fun and funny “Firefly” episode, Whedon is clearly being forced to force the issue, and as a result, it doesn’t work great as either a new pilot or a unique adventure. Nevertheless, there are many memorable Whedonesque moments as always, and Matt and push through some awkward pacing and technical issues (at the time, fixed now) as we look forward to the true start of the series in Episode 3 (says me) or Episode 4 (says Matt). TRIGGER WARNING. I tried. I really really really tried. But as a film fan, not a Star Wars fan, I can’t not hate almost everything that goes on in this movie. I never want to take a crap on something other people love, but this is a terrible, terrible piece of filmmaking by George Lucas that’s made even more perplexing by how fun and good Episodes I and III are. Nevertheless, Simi keeps us on point and we have a fantastic discussion about filmmaking, Lucas, SW, and the entire movie making and watching experience.
