Sinopsis
The long and short of it is that the three of us started getting together every Wednesday morning to drink coffee, take a break and figure out how we were going to make an impact (and how we could work together to do so). We called it 'Solving the World's Problems Coffee Hour'. We chatted about all kinds of ideas: research, new workouts, combining things, and crazy ideas we heard on podcasts. Then it dawned on us. We should start a podcast. Yep, that is how we thought we might be able to make a dent into the worlds problems (it all starts with a dent, right?) So here we are now. Several months of planning, brainstorming and politely asking Kyle's friend Justin (the awesome AV guy) if he could help us out. So what it's all about is that Clinically Pressed is going to be a traveling podcast and we will be recording on location. We are going to interview experts around the country from all health/nutrition/performance professions as well as include round table discussions covering major topics and questions. Our goal is to provide as much information as we can that is useful to viewers/listeners, and do it all at no cost. We want to make the complicated simple and make it something you can apply to your life. We hope you enjoy!

WWAR: Mindset-Carol Dweck
18/11/2021 Duración: 17minThis book is a must read and one that can be applied to almost every aspect of life. Whether you are training for yourself, helping someone else, or in just in implanting a growth mindset with your daily life, this is a read. The book focuses on a ‘growth’ vs. ‘fixed’ mindset and how they can impact your life. Fixed can keep you stuck and make the stakes seem higher than they need to be. A growth mindset allows for continued development and allows for adjustments to your approaches to continue to evolve. Again, highly recommend reading this book to apply it to your life. Ep. 83: Dichotomy in AT
11/11/2021 Duración: 43minDi’kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different. Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can’t run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch. Recognizing and embracing the dichotomy of ideas is important to all professions but can have some serious implications in athletic training. It is important to recognize the wide range of differing ideas but also be able to balance those in order to be maximally effective. We discussing this episode. Ep. 82: ‘Wish I Knew’-Nutrition
28/10/2021 Duración: 24minIn this part of the ‘Wish I Knew’ series we discuss nutrition. This topic can get in depth so quickly and there are so many facets of it that it could go on for hours, we tried to keep it short. Nutrition can get really complex, very quickly and that makes it even harder to apply good principles to your life and to others you serve. Some of the major take aways I’ve learned over the years is you have to start with the basics and try and cover as much of those as you can to start. From there you can start looking into the complex but you have to remember “there is no free lunch in physiology”. Anything you choose as an intervention is going to impact other things. Here is what I’ve learned. Research Review: Muscle Stiffness and Trigger Point Dry Needling
15/10/2021 Duración: 08minMuscle stiffness can be correlated with muscle pain. There are many ways to try and lessen it and in this study, researchers looked at how using TpDN would impact muscle stiffness of three muscle sites (infraspinatus, erector spinae and gastroc). What they found was that the reduction in muscle stiff was immediate but transitory. It happened to reduce immediate after intervention but increased again at 24 hours. This leads to potential impacts on intervention and when/where TpDN or other soft tissue work modalities could be useful in helping reduce muscle stiffness. It doesn’t lend to the idea that only these interventions will help maintain those changes. Interesting study and while it has its limitations (stated by authors) it opens up some interesting ideas for future treatment options. Reference: Kelly, J. P., Koppenhaver, S. L., Michener, L. A., Kolber, M. J., & Cleland, J. A. (2019). Immediate decrease of muscle biomechanics stiffness following dry needling in asymptomatic participants. Journal of B

REPLAY Ep. 69: Dr. Jake Erickson-Youth Sports Injury Prevention
05/10/2021 Duración: 23minThere is still time to sign up for the 2nd Annual Youth Sports Symposium (check out our FB page or Mayo Clinic Health System's FB event page). This is an episode we recorded leading up to the initial one two years ago. The importance of Youth Sports Injury and how to hopefully prevent as many as possible. Youth sports injuries happen, it's part of the game. Many of those injuries can be reduced or prevented with smart training and monitoring training loads. In this episode we sat down with Dr. Jake Erickson, a sports medicine physician in La Crosse, WI. Dr. Erickson details how overuse in youth injuries can have significant negative effects on a growing body. Dr. Erickson gives some simple and practical steps that both youth and parents can use to help protect youth athletes. These steps include basic, solid training along with monitoring how many hours athletes are being active. #complicatedsimple #complicatedsimple #progressive #openminded #PBE #EBP #noagenda #performanc

REPLAY Ep. 68: Andrew Jagim PhD-Youth Athlete Nutrition
02/10/2021 Duración: 26minWe recorded this leading up the Youth Sports Symposium in 2019. This year we are taking the Youth Sports Symposium online so anyone can attend. There is a great line up of speakers and a lot of great information. This is a replay of an episode on nutrition for youth athletes we recorded leading up to the event. Check it out. Register: https://fb.me/e/23dgm7Peb Youth sports has taken front and center in the conversation of sports safety. Early specialization, endless hours of practice and how that can affect a growing body. Recovery is key for all athletes but especially for this group and nutrition plays a key role in not only helping fuel youth athletes but helping them recovery and stay health. We talk with Andrew Jagim PhD about some best practices that can be implemented when it comes to youth sports nutrition. Research Review: Effect of Warm Up Swings on Bat Speed
16/09/2021 Duración: 08minBaseball players use all types of methods to warm up before they get up to bat. It is still common to see weighted donuts and other implements in the on deck circle as well as players swinging multiple bats at the same time. But does all of this add up to swinging the bat faster? This study takes a look how swinging different weighted bats prior to a normal bat impacts the velocity of the swing. The results may seem logically counterintuitive but it makes sense if you really think about it. Check it out. Reference: Montoya, B. S., Brown, L. E., Coburn, J. W., & Zinder, S. M. (2009). Ep. 81: "Wish I Knew"-Athletic Training
02/09/2021 Duración: 28minThis episode could have gone on for hours. Reflecting back on so many different things that I could have done differently in my career is almost daunting, but worth it to try and learn and shape a better career in the future. The lessons learned were not only clinical (but there were a lot of those). There were so many lessons that I should have learned earlier about interaction with patients, coaches, colleagues and others that could have made my life easier and provided better care for everyone. My hope with this one is to provide insight for any level of AT, but especially younger ATs so that they can identify areas that they can learn from earlier to help advance their career and knowledge faster than I did my own. I feel 5-7 years behind and if I can help others pick up their pace, it helps me do it with my own and makes the whole system better. I hope there are some great takeaways from this one and it generates so future learning and discussion. Check it out: www.clinicallypressed.com #complicatedsimpl

LI: An Introduction to Stoicism
25/08/2021 Duración: 15minThere are couple types of stoicism, Rick Cox in this Leadership Insight isn’t talking about the demeanor of being stoic but the theories, thoughts, principles of practices of stoicism. Stoicism has come back in gaining popularity as a way to apply ancient wisdom to everyday life through the work of Ryan Holiday and Tim Ferriss. This is an introduction to stoicism and what it is all about and Rick does a great job summing it up. If you’ve never heard of it before, great insight to check out, if you’ve been on the fence about looking into it, this might put you over. Enjoy. Ep. 80: "Wish I Knew"-Strength & Conditioning
13/08/2021 Duración: 26minThe goal of any practitioner should be to continue to evolve and grow in their craft throughout their career. If you’re treating/training the exact same way you were 5-10 years ago you aren’t evolving and that could be a problem. In this mini-series I’ll be going through some of the things I “Wish I knew” earlier in my career and how I hope to get ahead of that in the future. The first subject is, strength and conditioning. I discuss both my own personal, wish I knew when it came to my own training and how much time was mis-used along the way and also the professional aspect of my strength and conditioning career. I get the distinct feeling I’m 5-10 YEARS behind where I could be and am in the process of catching up to ensure I’m doing it the best I can. The hope is some of these ideas will help others get to that point of understanding sooner than I did. WWAR: Deskbound-Kelly Starrett
10/08/2021 Duración: 11minWWAR: Deskbound-Kelly Starrett We finally got to this book and it didn’t disappoint. We are big fans of Kelly Starrett and the mobility work he puts out and this is no exception. This book does a great job breaking down how sitting and being desk bound can have negative impacts on your health. Beyond that, Starrett does a great job giving practical things you can implement in your daily life to help address these issues and ultimately get more pain free and hopefully prevent injury in the future. WWAR: Functional Training
08/07/2021 Duración: 07minThe idea of "functional training" has evolved to the point that it can be hard to recognize. This book though takes what was original known as functional training and does a great job showing how it can be integrated into any program and have a great impact on a training program. The cover conceptual ideas as well as give plenty of exercises that you can choose from to incorporate into either a rehab or performance program. CI: Do Shoes Matter?
03/06/2021 Duración: 13minA topic that I used to be very into and had since faded for me but listening to an episode of Freakanomics brought it back to the front of my mind. Do the shoes you wear really matter? The episode talked about the evolution of shoes and what it means to your feet and some of the long-term health of your feet and body in general. In this Clinical Insight we get back into the discussion and offer some practical points to take away that you can apply to finding the “right” shoe for you. We also discuss time and place and that it doesn’t have to be one way or the other. Enjoy. Check it out. Ep. 80: Ego Is The Enemy
27/05/2021 Duración: 52minThis episode is a combination of ‘What We Are Reading’ and ‘Leadership Insight’. Joel is joined by Rick Cox (see Leadership Insights) to discuss some of their favorite passages from the book ‘Ego Is The Enemy’ by Ryan Holiday. This book hit both of them real hard, in a good way, that and made them think deep on what they can focus on when it comes to their own ego and how it applies to everything they do. In this episode they pulled out 3 of their favorite passages each and discussed how they apply to not only athletic training but to strength and conditioning, and other health and fitness realms. We highly recommend this book to everyone and if you can open up and be humble, there is so much more you can do in the world in a positive way. Check it out. Research Review: Alcohol and Athletes
17/04/2021 Duración: 09minWe recently did an episode discussing alcohol use and athletes. We wanted to follow that up with a quick review of some research on the topic. Looking at two articles (see below) we summarize what they found and how alcohol impacts athletes from the performance and recovery aspects. As with a lot of things, so much is dependent on context and how people choose to use alcohol. Check it out. Barnes, M. J. (2014). Alcohol: Impact on sports performance and recovery in male athletes.
