  • Episode 41 - Film Scores and Composers

    23/10/2017 Duración: 42min

On episode 41 of Film Focus, I finally, FINALLY get around to talking about one of the topics I've wanted to cover since I started this podcast; film scores and composers. Now if you've followed this podcast for a while you will know I have a massive love and appreciation for film scores and always mention composers when they do good work. I already did an episode on superhero themes back in episode 36, but in this episode, I really wanted to dive deep and talk about the episode in an expanded manner. Here are some important time codes: 00:00 Introduction 07.05 Danny Elfman discussion 10.46 John Williams discussion 17.01 Hans Zimmer discussion 20.38 Michael Giacchino discussion 24.03 Second Tier Composers discussion P.S. Since I don't use the official music from film soundtracks, there are certain points when I do my own renditions of them so if my versions of these classic songs offend your eyes apologises in advance. • Episode 40 - Blade Runner 2049 Review

    09/10/2017 Duración: 29min

On episode 40 of Film Focus, I talk about one of the most anticipated sequels of not only the year but also in recent film history, Blade Runner 2049. So the first Blade Runner is hailed as one of the best and most influential films of all time, so with talk of a sequel most fans were hesitant that the original film would be ruined. But after Denis Villeneuve was attached as director, a lot of film fans felt there was hope for a solid film. So is the sequel a good time or not? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. • Episode 39 - Kingsman: The Golden Circle Review

    25/09/2017 Duración: 33min

On episode 39 of Film Focus, I talk about another one of my most anticipated films of the year in the form of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Now Kingsman: The Secret Service was not only one of the best surprises of 2015 but was also one of my favourite films of that year, so when I heard there'd be a sequel, I was hesitant but hopeful since Matthew Vaughn was coming back to direct. So is the sequel a good time or not? Well, check out this review to find out. P.S. This review will contain SPOILERS, but they will be at the END of the episode. So you can still listen to the episode, but there will be a point where I stop and switch to spoiler territory at 23:29! Also, I made a mistake with Petro Pascal's character name around 13:00, it was actually Whiskey, not Jack Daniels. • Episode 38 - IT Review

    12/09/2017 Duración: 21min

On episode 38 of Film Focus, I talk about the talked about films of the year, It. With this being the second adaptation of the Stephen King book there was some apprehension about it because 1) A good few people loved the first film from the 90's with Tim Curry and didn't want another version. And 2)The initial images of Pennywise/It didn't really gel with people. However, after the trailers came out it really started to win people over, me included. So with the early positive word of mouth, a lot of people were excited to see how this film turned out. So was it a good time or not? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. On episode 37 of Film Focus, we do a recap/review of the summer movies of 2017. And yes you read that correctly, I said "we", as today marks the first time I have a guest on the podcast as I'm joined by Drew from Drew's Movie Reviews to discuss our thoughts on most of the films released over the course of the summer. From Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to Dunkirk to Logan Lucky and Atomic Blonde, we get to cover a lot of films that came out from April through to August. The specifics of our casual discussion are listed below as we cover: 1) Our general thoughts on the summer films of 2017 and how it compared to last year 2) We briefly review the films we saw during the summer 3) We do a top 5 best and worst films of the summer 4) And talk briefly talk about our favourite upcoming films in the fall/winter season P.S. • Episode 36 - Theme Songs In Superhero Films

    05/08/2017 Duración: 37min

On episode 36 of Film Focus, I talk about theme songs in superhero films. Now, this is a topic I've wanted to cover for a little while and after the release of Wonder Woman and how much people have taken to her theme song, I thought the time was right to talk about it on the podcast. So superhero theme songs, while it is not an element that a lot of people pay attention to, it is one of the key aspects that make superhero characters recognisable and awesome and in this episode I cover: 1) Superhero theme importance 2) The recognisable themes 3) The themes that don't get enough love 4) The themes that missed the mark 5) And upcoming superhero films that could have good theme songs P.S. There are moments of me giving verbal renditions of some of the theme songs so if you find it a little cringe-worthy I apologise in advance. • Episode 35 - War for the Planet of the Apes Review

    16/07/2017 Duración: 24min

On episode 35 of Film Focus, I talk about the latest film in the Planet of the Apes reboot series; War for the Planet of the Apes. Now of all the films I was looking forward to this year including Logan, Guardians 2, Spider-Man and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars Episode VIII, War for the Planet of the Apes was easily in the top 3. Back in 2011 Rise really blew me away with its interesting story, characters, and action, and then Dawn came out 2014 and completely floored me with the character-driven story, drama, and visual effects. And since the first trailer dropped last year I've been beyond hyped to see if this film would deliver the epic third chapter that this trilogy needed. So how does War for the Planet of the Apes fare? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. The audio issue has been fixed as of 17/07/2017. Sorry about that peeps. • Episode 34 - Spider-Man: Homecoming Review

    08/07/2017 Duración: 28min

On episode 34 of Film Focus I talk about the latest film from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures in the form of Spider-Man: Homecoming. After Spider-Man he was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War last year I knew I was ready for his solo film straight away. So with a decent marketing campaign and a lot of hopeful interviews with the cast and crew about how this latest version of Spider-Man would turn out, is it a successful reboot or another disappointing session? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. I probably sound less charismatic than usual and that was due to me being really exhausted at the time of recording and I apologize for that if I come across as unenthusiastic. • Episode 33 - Wonder Woman Review

    02/06/2017 Duración: 20min

On episode 33 of Film Focus, I talk about the latest film from Warner Bros. and DC; Wonder Woman. Now there's been a lot of hype and concern that's been projected onto this film from the day it was announced, and it has also faced an uphill battle with sceptics who were either unimpressed with the previous films in the DCEU or wasn't keen on Gal Gadot as the title character. So, with all that in mind does Wonder Woman succeed as not only the first good DCEU film but also the first female-lead superhero film? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. I may butcher the pronunciation of certain actor and character names so apologies in advance. • Episode 32 - Godzilla (2014) Vs. Kong Skull Island

    13/05/2017 Duración: 34min

On episode 32 of Film Focus, I cover the topic of which film is better; Godzilla (2014) or this year's Kong: Skull Island? After the release of the latest version of King Kong, a lot of people online started to debate which of these films were better and in this episode, I will discuss my views on each film, cover the pros and cons and then ultimately say which is my favourite. I've been wanting to talk about this topic for around 2 months now and because there's a small window of opportunity between film releases I thought I'd bring it up and see if I could bring an interesting voice to this discussion. • Episode 31 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review

    29/04/2017 Duración: 18min

On episode 31 of Film Focus, I talk about the long-awaited sequel and latest film from Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! So far 2017 has given us some good experiences in the cinema and now we have Guardians Vol. 2, a sequel that has a lot to live up to considering how incredibly fun and surprising the first film was in 2014. The marketing has been super fun and interesting with good choices of music, wonderful visuals and of course Baby Groot! So, is this the sequel fans have been waiting for? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. There's some minor audio skipping that occurs that I couldn't work around so apologies for that. • Episode 30 - The Fate of the Furious Review

    15/04/2017 Duración: 23min

On episode 30 of Film Focus, I talk about the next major film of 2017 and the 8th entry in the Fast and Furious series, The Fate of the Furious. Now I was never a fan of these films until around the 4th film, but Fast Five was where I fell in love with these films and since then they've only gotten more and more fun and ridiculous. So, is this another solid entry in the series? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. P.S. Here's some minor information: Trailer discussion for Spider-Man: Homecoming, IT, War For the Planet of the Apes & Star Wars: The Last Jedi: 01.41 The Fate of the Furious Review: 05.00 Also around 17.10, I meant to say Fast & Furious 8, not 7. • Episode 29 - Double Review - Power Rangers & Ghost in the Shell

    01/04/2017 Duración: 33min

On episode 29 of Film Focus, I'm doing a double film review for Power Rangers & Ghost in the Shell. My anticipation levels for both films weren't all that high, with Power Rangers I was curious as to how they'd adapt the original series but was worried it be too serious and different, and Ghost in the Shell besides the really pretty visuals, the marketing hadn't grabbed me. So how do these films hold up? Well check out the episode to find out. P.S. 11/03/2017 Duración: 20min

On episode 28 of Film Focus, I talk about the next big blockbuster of 2017 in the form of Kong: Skull Island. Now this film has done well to capture the attention of audiences with the marketing and while I liked the first trailer, I wasn't as keen on the subsequent trailers, but as the next reimagining of King Kong before the crossover film with Godzilla in 2020, I was hyped to see what the filmmakers would do with the story, characters and visual effects. So, does the film hold up? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out. 24/02/2017 Duración: 25min

On episode 26 of Film Focus, I'm doing a double film review for John Wick: Chapter 2 & The Lego Batman Movie. Like the triple review from episode 24, I saw these films fairly recently and thought it would be best to put both reviews together to save time. So here we have two films that were built off of successful predecessors, one is a sequel and the other is a spin-off, plus there was a lot of hype surrounding both films before their release too. So how do these films hold up? Well, check out the review to find out. P.S. • Episode 25 - Watching Films Together Vs Watching Alone

    11/02/2017 Duración: 22min

On episode 25 of Film Focus, I discuss the topic of watching films together vs. watching them alone. This is a subject that has been debated for a little while now and I thought it would make for an interesting episode of the podcast, so the episode will basically cover the pros and cons of each and also cover my own experience too. • Episode 24 - Triple Review: Split, XXX: Return of Xander Cage & T2 Trainspotting

    28/01/2017 Duración: 24min

On episode 24 of Film Focus, I bring you not one, not two, but three film reviews all in one episode. Since I've watched Split, XXX: Return of Xander Cage and T2 Trainspotting within a fairly short space of each other, I thought it would be an interesting idea to put my thoughts on each film and try a slightly different/condensed style of review and see how that ended up. So how do these films hold up? Well, check out the review to find out. P.S. • Episode 23 - La La Land Review

    14/01/2017 Duración: 18min

On episode 23 of Film Focus I talk about the much-talked-about musical of 2016 that got rave reviews out of America last year; La La Land. Now I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but since I loved Sing Street and there was SO much hype surrounding this film towards the late side of last year, I had to check it out. So how does the film hold up? Well, check out the review to find out. • Episode 22 - Assassin's Creed Review

    14/01/2017 Duración: 26min

On episode 22 of Film Focus, I talk about Assassin's Creed; the most recent video game adaptation based on the popular game series. So it is 2017, and how does one start their new film experience in the cinema? By watching a terrible film, that's how! Now this film got slaughtered by critics when it was released in late December last year and didn't fare much better when it was finally released in the UK at the start of this year, so I knew it'd be bad, but I had no idea it'd be as terrible as it was. So this review will be a sort of rant at the same time, there will be passion in my words and a fair amount of shouting too, so with that in mind I hope you enjoy this episode.
