Sea Hags Podcast

Tarot pro Sharon Pink joins us this week to talk perception, ritual, and summer camp for fully-grown witches! We look at the different ways tarot and magic can complement self-work like therapy and exercise, and how to create perspective where there was none before. Bonus ep sees Katie get read, and get read she does.

Since we love nothing so much as arbitrary milestones, let’s call this episode the 2nd anniversary of the creation myth of the Sea Hags. We recount some adventures in the ride-or-die aspect of our relationship, the vulnerability factor of different art forms, and what pure joy it would be to give up and swathe ourselves forever in Costco-exclusive apparel. Man of lascivious vintage tastes–and now a man of letters–nearly-Dr. Justin O’Hearn returns to the podcast with a butane torch and an attitude. JK, he’s super sweet and perfect, and we have a wonderful afternoon gab about the Great British Bake Off, Back to the Future, and the aquatic propulsion of scallops. In a first for the Sea Hags, we have dessert made for us live in the studio, and then we eat it, which is not great for the audio medium. Enjoy!

An early ep this week, in order to put some fire under this WICKED Vancouver Fringe show–not that it needs our help–50 Shades of Dave, an erotic parody of the Vinyl Cafe. The writers, Kyle Carpenter and Nico Dicecco, the latter of whom stars as the dearly departed Stuart MacLean, provide untold stories of Dave and Morely. We bite the Inside the Actor’s Studio devices and ask “Can we speak to Dave?”, which Nico delivers with extreme aplomb. Somehow we also determine that God has a cloaca. Fringe.

On beat for the threepeat, our girl Allison is back to sweat, chat, and sip on some fine tequila cocktails as we start to tie up the loose ends of our fabulously dirtbag summer. Chris and Alli get a touch teary over their band’s farewell show (Everybody Kissed Goodbye!), and Katie drags the whole fall lineup of Forever 21′s plus size store.

Our guest this week is a sweet lil fidget spinner and a hilarious comedian, it’s Pam Choi! We long for the days of celebrity death hoaxes, we love to eat alone, and we’ve determined that there are three basic roles a person can play – Grill Daddy, Corn Mommy, or Cream Baby. It’s not as disgusting as it sounds. Mostly.

A surprising chick lit bait-and-switch inspires a fiery convo between your hosts about standing up for yourself and others, and the space that’s freed up by no longer giving a fuck. No guest, but a whole lot of rustled jimmies.

Comedian and professional roustabout Chris James joins us in the shack this week to talk about his new life’s work: Antagonizing bigoted radio show hosts for fun and (hopefully) profit! Creative resistance and attention-seeking? You know we’re on board.

Charming male comic (and secret spooky girl) San Aung joins us to talk about house party movies, anime cons and sad girl pop. San records his dating profile, Katie insists that Bill Clinton is not the king of Thailand, Chris nearly dies in a waterfall. The Human Rights Commission is back, in POG form!

Guestless and restless smack dab in the middle of summer, we enjoy a bit of catch-up and navigate some life changes. We enter the realm of fantasy by designing our ideal shared pied-à-terre, and Katie once more electrocutes herself live on the air. Quality programming.

Chris and Karina process a heavy week, we invent a new podcast for roasting Nicholas Cage (Cage Match–turns out it already exists!), Chris slips on a pickle slice, and Katie explains exactly what makes Scrooge McDuck the antichrist. Furious 2–Electric Matty Vu! Vancouver’s cutest comic is back in the hot seat and bringing out the worst in us as we delve into the depths of Nashville, The Fast Octology, and How to Make a Canadian Craft Corner. Hold on to your butts, butts, buttz!

Ayy, this spicily numbered episode made for some spicy conversation this week with special guest Laurie! There’s a new Premier I’d Like to Frolf, and BC is going in a New Direction. Say it slower. Slower. There you go. Heehehe. Laurie regales us with her tales of living in the wilds of New Brunswick (proper outhouse etiquette is key), and teaching in the wilds of high school. The tarot deck makes another appearance amidst increasingly reaching innuendos–oh, those friday night recordings.

Troubadour Orit Shimoni returns to talk about her latest tour, PTSD, dominion over your food, and fake Dutch idioms. Chris gets super bougie (quelle suprise!), and Katie electrocutes her broken butt with Dr. Ho’s in(fomercial)famous machine. There’s something for everyone here.

Body Break! OK, we couldn’t get the rights to the Participaction theme tune (damn you, Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod!) but we’re all about the human bod this week with our lovely guest, RMT and anatomy nerd Ray! We ask them the hard-hitting, visceral (sorry) questions–favorite muscle has three sub-categories, apparently–and get all that good knowledge on the various ways we can treat our fragile meat prisons a little better.

Rip off a chunk of sourdough bread and Krakow open a cold one with the boys, because Chris brings us Anya, a friend from the old country (and fellow slytherin/capricorn combo) to talk Catholic paganism, stories of immigrant resistance, Polish idioms, poetry in translation, and the cult of the crone.

Musical powerhouse (film composer! singer! voice coach! probably a siren!) Red Heartbreaker joins us this week to talk big emotions, intimidation, and making one’s mark. Chris invents a new reality show segment, Red spews some creative curses, and Katie opens up the Gusset and Bustle pub, where un-heaving bosoms need not apply! This week, we’ve got ravishing raconteur Jo Dworschak, host and producer of the live storytelling show, Story, Story, Lie, and soon to be the hands on the wheel for Families Across Canada, a road trip (and a to-be-written book) with her giant teen son! They’ll interview people, and, well, families…across Canada… You know, the title really does its job there. We spelunk the depths of depression together (content warning for frank talk of death and suicide), bemoan a lack of discount valentine’s chocolate, and co-write a Tom Waits musical on Anne of Green Gables.

Ed Konyha, Vancouver’s favourite comedy dad/uncle and John Horgan impersonator, sits down with us this week to chat about comedy socialism, reciprocity, and fairness, We talk about the importance of having the right people by your side in life and in love, and the joy of watching people progress in their art.

When last we chatted, our lil pal Madison was shopping for a PhD program. Well, she got in. To SEVEN OF EIGHT of them. Why, that’s almost a Star Trek character!
