Sea Hags Podcast

Eek! We’re back after an unscheduled break due to election commitments and tech issues. We missed you terribly. This week’s ep has us rolling in from our first-ever visit to a Korean spa, steamed, soaked, salted, and sauna’d, and boy does it make for languid conversations. We might not be in our finest form, but this episode is certainly our truest. We chat about book-to-TV adaptations, conflict and discomfort, and how to get $1,000 of free scotch.

OK, full disclosure, neither of us have actually listened to Chapo Trap House, but we get all hecked up on the politics in this episode, and kind of just tell everyone what to do?? Look, a vote is a chess move, not a valentine. Voting with your heart is a silly goose move. Related, the provincial election continues to drain most of Chris’s time and energy, so the best we can do for y’all is a sleepovercast from the Riverside Shack–change of location courtesy of a SKUNK’S BUTT doing our studio a dirty. Ugh. We stay consistent, but at what cost??

If this were a more visual medium, you might be seeing double, because this week’s guest is Katie’s identical comedy twin (not really) - Jackie Hoffart! She joins us for a Sea Hags after dark special when we meet late on a Sunday to discuss the queerer side of life with every stereotype joyfully represented. That’s right, cat family, sperm banks, softball, drag, and responsible political engagement. Hold on to your Tevas!

The election is in full swing, our schedule is hecked – ergo, we’re pulling a double duty of business and pleasure as Chris joins Katie in New West for a podcast n’ party! Out of the studio for a podcast verité experience, Chris is WIPED OUT and barely recognizes Katie due to a change in hair part, we discuss Last Meals, childhood career dreams, and selling pictures of our feet to pay the bills.

Let’s pretend we’re on a regular schedule and not recording some episodes back to back! Somehow we booked Ashley twice! Whoops! This time around we got political (and hopefully not too partisan) regarding the Provincial election – the writ drops TODAY (April 11). We also get into the meat of personal organization strategies, gay sports (all sports are gay now, sorry, we don’t make the rules), and dreams sponsored by Squarespace. We are not sponsored by Squarespace, but we are, as ever, eager for the opportunity to shill for whomsoever might give us money.

Our ol’ pal Ashley is back for the first of two episodes that are loosely about politics (here comes the election!) but also about way more fun things–like what kind of vampires are the most interesting to us on a CONCEPTUAL level. Lots of bad no-no words in this one!

One of Vancouver’s most beloved multi-hyphenates (actress-writer-sketch comedy wizard-cat whisperer-Lady Show founder) Morgan Brayton joins us this week to delve into the deep waters of literal animal magnetism, growing up an only child, and what happens when a soft heart lives inside a bossy, stubborn body. Katie’s snake saga sadly comes to a close, unless this episode marks the beginning of a tale of petty and calculatedly legal vengeance. Lord Bunbury of Mount Pleasant guest stars in a flashback.

No guest this week while we round up our year in the life of our podcast. The very essence of the Sea Hags comes through as two best buds love up one another, muse about life, and examine our goals versus what we’ve actually managed to commit to digital paper–not doing too bad! lThis week marks one year since we began releasing episodes of Sea Hags, and we are absolutely thrilled to bring you this episode with one of Vancouver’s very favourite comics: Mr. Graham Clark! Graham hustles Chris out of her heirloom jewelery, we realize our studio is basically an opium den, and we proceed to get a good jump on solving all the world’s problems like drugs, politics and world hunger. Of course, we have to talk comedy, and Graham provides some very simple (yet so hard to internalize!) wisdom. We’ve got it good in this city, and this chat surely proves that he’s part of a reason this scene is so special.

Get ready to take a bump from one of the superstars of Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling, Cat Power! Thanks to Chris’s SUPERHUMAN networking power, we get to have an ELECTRIFYING chat about all the ins, outs, spears, and suplexes of that GLORIOUS crown jewel of sports entertainment: Pro Meat Smashing. Cat and Katie fangirl over the technical perfection and soft soccer mom hair of AJ Styles, Chris learns the lingo, and we find out just how much it hurts to do the thing you love.

We are so pleased to bring you an episode with the luminous and wise Avery Alder, as we have long been eager to share her light with our listeners. Avery is a game-maker (Monsterhearts, anyone?), a queer mama, and a pillar of a well-fed community. She centers nurturing and nourishment in her life and her activism, and speaks to the importance of a community kitchen to all successful social movements. And holy moly, does she ever want to make you some delicious bread. We also discuss Quakerism, anti-facism, and the importance of having a focused project versus the desire to be and do all things.

Well, gosh darn it, it was so nice to see Noel that we ended up doing two eps in a day. This is a short one mostly about the beautiful/disgusting dichotomy of pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood, and how easy it is to get on the wrong side of the dreaded “mommy wars” online. Apparently you can’t even be creeped out by ReBorn Dolls anymore.

This week’s guest is a longtime friend who crossed a sea to be with us on this lovely long weekend–Noel! We talk creating life, and plumb some dark depths around losing parents, as we come fresh off Chris’ dad’s funeral. We find that there is a lot of commonality among the reluctant bereaved, and sometimes you just need to joke about what the hell to do with a big ol’ box of cremains. Loss is complicated, guys. There are still a surprising number of laughs to be had this episode, so please enjoy, and may all your popes be so very young.

We get a bit serious with this ep, but it’s not all doom and gloom–our guest this week is the phenomenal Lana Fox, an overdose prevention educator, who joins us to talk about what’s going on on the ground with Vancouver’s opiate crisis. We find out who is doing the hard work (surprise, it’s punx and peers!) to provide lifesaving care and compassion to people living with addictions to an increasingly dangerous class of drugs. We also muse on prevention and treatment for caregiver burnout, and punk house parenting. Let’s all take care of each other in this scary mixed-up world, hey?

Our Darling Nikki joins us to wail about the figurative smoking crater that is the state of things in her homeland, the US. Once we’ve purged that little emotional demon for the moment, we try channeling the year of the Rooster, talk developing resilience, and explore the finer points of complex weed science! THEM TERPS.

We all muse ideas for the perfect lunch restaurant, share travel adventures, and we absolutely do not record in a shed full of rats.

At long last, we have the chanteuse behind our Sea Hags theme song, it’s Hilary McNaughton on the pod! She shares some of her wisdom about life, love, community, and oh-so-many EMOTIONS. We talk body shapes, fancy bras, the wonders of Model Express, and we enjoy secret candy out of a toque.

A new year and back in the swing of things, we’re joined this week by Roman Mancini, a comedian and a recent transplant from our nation’s capital. Katie and Roman introduce a never-to-be-repeated Pro Wrestling Minute, we drag Dan Brown, which gives way to discussions of handsome jesus, harems (life goals, multiple wife goals?), closet shamans, and a very, very rude digression that makes this one for our relatives to avoid!

Just a quick one with no guests that we laid down between rehearsals for our New Year’s show! We tried to get hygge with it, but with a heaping handful of rock and roll energy. We talk–again!–about how important the routine practice of podcasting is to us, how to build a life worth sharing, low-key life dreams, and the real dreams Chris hopes to have on her BRAND NEW MATTRESS (hopefully purchased using another podcast’s price discount).

Christmas baby Chris hosts her birthday party ahead of the day so rudely hijacked by a certain son of a certain someone, and we’re pilfering a few of the party guests to hear what little nuggets of gold they were able to mine from this craptastic year. Thanks for the character growth, 2016, I GUESS. On an episode number that suggests the answer to life, the universe and everything, we share the reasons we keep on truckin’, and our hopes for the next 365.
