This week, I sit down with Chad Townsend, who is the owner of Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream. Millie’s opened about 5 years ago and has been taking over the ice cream game ever since. I talk with Chad about where he came from and how the hell someone just decides to start making ice cream for a living. Chad started cooking when he was a kid, like most of us. He quickly decided that cooking was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life, so he went to culinary school. He wanted to cook great food. Ice cream didn’t come into the picture for some years after but, here we are now. Millie’s is planting itself into the main vein of Pittsburgh Culture. Starting off with a single ice cream maker and a tapped out wife’s credit card, he had some work to do. OneUp Skateshop is an iconic fixture in the Pittsburgh skateboard scene. They opened in their West Mifflin location in 2003 and have been pushing ever since. I talk with Justin about his progression with photography over the years and how he began his journey. Justin first started out taking photos of his friends that were in bands and quickly made a name for himself in the city of Pittsburgh. We talk about how he went from shooting random friends to linking up with and becoming Mac Miller’s photographer for the last 6 or 7 years. Justin had the opportunity to travel the world and experience some dope shit and he shares some stories with me about what it was like to be a touring photographer. It is with great sadness that we lost such a pivotal and impactful artist in Mac Miller this year. Zed’s is a vintage and resale shop that specializes in everything from vintage Tommy Hilfiger and Polo to the most sought after Yeezy, Jordan, and Supreme pieces. I talk to Zed about how he was first exposed to fashion and where his knowledge of the industry grew from. This week, I sat down with Brian Gonnella. Brian is a full time artist from Pittsburgh that has been living off his passion for years. We talk about where his love of art came from and how it’s been a consistent part of his life since the beginning. Early on, Brian fell in love with comic books and hip hop music. From there, his interests blossomed into graffiti, “street art,” traveling, and much more. We talk about how he transitioned his artwork from a hobby into a way to pay the bills, living on a Indian Reservation as part of an art residency that allowed him and other street artists access to unlimited blank walls to fill with dope work, how much work and money goes into the big murals we all see on the side of huge buildings, and how important it is for other people with bigger platforms to use their voice and make some shit happen within the community.   This week, I sat down with Alyssa Fine to talk about bees. Bees and I don’t get along that well but I’ve always been curious about them. I was on the hunt for the right person, so I googled “Pittsburgh Honey” and to my surprise I came across Alyssa’s store, @pittsburghhoney. She looked super legit from the pictures on her profile so I knew she’d be the right person to talk to. I went to her shop to talk with her about how she got into this world, the process of starting your own hive, caring for your bee’s, harvesting honey, pests, the endless possibilities of things you can make using bees wax and honey, and literally so much more. This week, I get to go toe to toe with the great one, again. Ralph Martino was previously on ICYRB (Ep 31 if you’d like to check it out and get up to speed) to talk about his journey from being the obese guy you see in these first couple photos to the guy you see in the last couple photos. This week I sat down with the man behind @thehouseofkutz and Chésua Hair Products. Ché is a entrepreneur that has lived all over. Growing up in Toledo, Ché had the hustle mentality instilled in his lifestyle early. We talk about what life was like growing up. I wanted to know where his incredible mindset grew from. If you follow any of his social media you can see he has a different type of grind to anything he does. His page oozes motivation and I could tell that from the beginning. He tells me about how he got duped by The Art Institute of Pittsburgh by enrolling in school and quickly realizing that wasn’t the correct path. From there, Ché walked me through how he went from hustling $5 cuts out of his dorm to finally opening his own studio, The House of Kutz. We talk about family, friends, creating his own hair products in his kitchen, and the process of manufacturing his product on a bigger scale. This week we go down the rabbit hole with gonzo producer & comedian Dustin Sussman to discuss his 15+ years adventuring through the entertainment industry and what eventually lead him back home to Pittsburgh. Dustin and I talk about moving all over and eventually making LA home base for more than a decade. We talk about him working at The Château Marmont and all his wild interactions with celebrities like Jerry & Anne Stiller, and even the great Hunter S. Thompson. Dustin then talks me through how he ended up in New York City where he pursued his comedy career and eventually directed and produced a documentary highlighting longtime Comedy Cellar comedian, Rick Crom.
