We are children of the Universe. God, Goddess, the Divine is our spiritual parent. We have human parents. We include our spiritual perspectives in parenting our own children and others in our lives that we care for. We also have an internalized parent, that may be healthy and loving or critical and destructive, depending on how we treat ourselves. These are all aspects of spiritual parenting, stewardship of the soul.  Our relationships with God, with ourselves and others create the fabric of our lives. We are spiritual caregivers, and care receivers, in all of these areas, whether we are conscious of it or not. Metaphysics teaches that he physical world of form and the non-physical realms of mind, emotion and spirit operate as a system. They are not separate. What is happening in our physical reality obviously impacts how we feel and think, but the reverse is true as well. Prayer and meditation are like a spiritual conversation. Prayer is talking and meditation is listening. We can all grow in our communication skills, both with the people in our lives and with Source. Doing the same spiritual practice over time has benefits, but it also has risks. Experimenting with different types of prayer and exploring new traditions can invigorate a lifeless spirituality. There is a difference between conditional and unconditional love. Most of what we call love may not actually be loving. We often confuse neediness, desire or dependency for love. Our birth circumstances can create a template for the karmic issues that call us to grow in this lifetime. What we resist persists. If we don’t work through our stuff and grow and evolve in the here and now, our issues may follow us into the next incarnation. Perhaps we even agree to our life situation on a soul level so that we can grow and evolve our own consciousness. In our busy lives we often spend more time checking off our to do list and getting on to the next task then we do actually experiencing the beauty and complexity of life. It's easy to take things for granted and miss the many opportunities for joy and fulfillment that are always available to us. When we learn to look deeply at ourselves, our relationships and the world around us, we find that gratitude and happiness arise naturally from within. This is the practice of mindfulness. Renee talks about learning to look deeply while on retreat with the Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh and gives some practical tips for living more fully by looking deeply right now. Thich Nhat Hanh passed away on Jan 22, 2022, after this throwback episode was recorded. Judgement is rooted in fear and separates us from others and from our own authentic self. Most of us feel stuck in some areas of our life. We might be stuck in an unfulfilling job, a dead relationship, with our health, weight, education,  or with a creative project we can't seem to start or finish. Often we have conflicting motives, desires or beliefs within us. There's what we consciously want for ourselves; but there may be other, unconscious parts of us that are afraid of change, don't believe we are worthy of success or love, or want to keep us safe from taking risk and sabotage our evolution. There is a spiritual principle that we create what we believe. If we are unsatified with our life circumstances, the possibility for positive change is ALWAYS available. We may need to look deeply to uncover and resolve the deeper conflicts within. Rules, structure and cultural norms can be helpful, but they can also keep us small or limited. When we measure our success or model our behavior to meet the expectations of others, we may be ignoring our own deeper truth. It's fine to do what's expected of us, or what we think we "should" do, as long as it makes us happy.
