Episode 155: Who Creates Reality? (Progressive Christianity)
25/03/2021 Duración: 51minProgressive Christianity is attracting a new following of Christians these days. There are many issues with the doctrine of Progressive Christianity, but one of the main issues is about authority. Is the Bible authoritative over our lives, or are we authoritative over the Bible? Do we submit to God’s truth, or do we create our own truth? These are important questions to answer about authority. In order to understand how these types of ideas have crept into Christian thinking, we need to understand post-modern relativistic ideology. In this episode, Robby talks through the underlying philosophy of progressive Christian doctrine, and how this philosophy is not livable. We hope that this will equip you to talk with your friends and family who have relativistic thinking and help them to see that absolute truth does exist. Episode 154: How (Not) to Read the Bible! With Dan Kimball
18/03/2021 Duración: 52minThere are some crazy-sounding things in the Bible, and often, we as Christian gloss over them and do not develop an adequate reason for why they exist. This week, we have author Dan Kimball on the podcast to talk about some of the difficult passages of Scripture and how through good Bible Study Methods, we can make sense of them. Dan is a pastor at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, CA, as well as a Professor at Western Seminary. His newest book, "How (Not) to Read the Bible: Making Sense of the Anti-Women, Anti-Science, Pro-Violence, Pro-Slavery and Other Crazy-Sounding Parts of Scripture," is a great resource that we highly recommend. This episode will equip you to defend the difficult passages in the Scriptures and help you to explain that they aren’t as crazy as they sound. Episode 153: The Dangers of Progressive Christianity
11/03/2021 Duración: 59minFor years there has been a movement trying to make Christianity relevant to the post-modern culture. It used to be called the Emergent Church Movement, but now it is going by a new name: Progressive Christianity. This is a belief system that we need to not only be aware of but also know how to correct with good Biblical truth. On the surface, Progressive Christianity sounds good, but when you look deeper into it, there are many doctrinal errors that do not align with classic Christianity. In this episode, we look into progressive Christian beliefs about the Bible, the morality of Scripture, the importance of Jesus, and what the Gospel is. We hope this will equip you to stand for the truth and help others see the truth of God’s Word. Episode 152: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (Says To Me)
04/03/2021 Duración: 44minThis is our final series on C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. This week we are focusing on what Scripture "says to me." After implementing all of the tools for good Bible study and coming to a place of understanding what the text says, we need to ask the question: “How does this apply to my life?” Application of Scripture is very important for those of us who want to be disciples of Jesus. How the text applies to our lives can sometimes be hard to discern. In this episode, we will give you some practical questions to ask, which will help you to discern how Scripture should be applied to your life. We hope that this series has been helpful in equipping you to study Scripture well and to correctly interpret what it says. Episode 151: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (Text Says)
25/02/2021 Duración: 43minWe are back in our series about how to read Scripture in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. This week we are focusing on what the "Text Says." It is vital for us to observe what is in the text before we begin to interpret the text. Observation is such a simple tool to use, but it is not easy. We often want to jump to an interpretation of what the text means instead of taking the time to first see what it says. In this episode, we take a look at the "Parable of the Sower" and how slowing down to access what the text says can help us to make an accurate interpretation. Episode 150: Sexual Sin in Christian Leaders (Ravi Zacharias)
18/02/2021 Duración: 49minThis past week has been difficult with the report coming out about the egregious sexual sin of famed apologist Ravi Zacharias. We cannot overlook this or downplay the magnitude of the deception and sin that was happening in the private life of this prominent Christian leader. What do we make of this? What can we learn from this cautionary tale? How can we safeguard our lives so as not to make the same mistake? Scripture encourages Christians to walk in the light, confess our sins to God and to one another, and that by doing this, we can live the abundant life. Our fellowship with God, our authentic/transparent relationships with our Christian community, and our honesty are vital in having victory over the secret/hidden sins that so easily entangle us. This episode is a hard listen, but it is necessary for us to learn from the horrendous mistakes of others. Episode 149: LIVE: The Purpose and Duration of Hell (Special Episode)
11/02/2021 Duración: 01h18sIs hell an eternal place of conscious torment, or is it merely a place where people go to be purified and eventually reunited with God in heaven? Do human souls exist forever in hell, or are they eventually destroyed? Is God just in punishing people eternally for sinful lives of 80-90 years? These are the types of questions that we discuss on this week’s episode of Christ, Culture, & Coffee. As Christians, it is important for us to understand the differing views on hell within evangelicalism, and also know what we believe about the destiny of the unsaved. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at Palmcroft Church in Phoenix, AZ. We are thankful for the great questions, and the delicious coffee that was served at this live event. Episode 148: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (eXplanation)
04/02/2021 Duración: 45minWords are important when it comes to interpreting our Bibles. As we con tin in our bible study methods series, we are looking at the eXplanation of words in this episode. A great method for studying Scripture is to conduct word studies for the passages you are diving into. A word study helps us to understand the definitions/range of meaning of a word, and through looking at the context of the passage, we can see which definition is being used. This method will help ensure that we do not load our theological baggage onto a word and then read our presupposed doctrines into the text. The goal of good bible study methods is to understand what Scripture says and take from Scripture our doctrines and our practices. We hope this episode will teach you a new skill and that you will implement it in your Bible Study. Episode 147: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (Echoes)
28/01/2021 Duración: 42minBible study is enjoyable, especially when you are looking for patterns. Echoes in Scripture are an important indication of the emphasis of a passage, chapter, and even the entire book. Echoes are repeated words, phrases, and concepts that are weaved into the passages of Scripture. This episode helps to show how Echoes can inform our interpretation of Scripture. Episode 146: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (Name & Time)
21/01/2021 Duración: 45minThis week, we are looking into the Name (author) and the Time (date) of the book of Philippians. As we continue to study the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S., knowing who wrote a book of the Bible and when it was written helps us understand the message that the author was conveying. By knowing the background of the Apostle Paul and the situation that he was in when he penned the Epistle to the Philippians, we can gain an understanding of the things he says. We hope that this series is an encouragement to you and that you are implementing these study habits into your Bible Study. Episode 145: Reading the Bible in C.O.N.T.E.X.T.S. (Occasion)
14/01/2021 Duración: 54minWe are continuing in our series on how to study Scripture! This week we are specifically looking at the "Occasion" of the text and how understanding the cultural background, and the immediate context helps with interpreting what Scripture means. So often, the Bible is treated like a simple, easy to grasp self-help book, when in fact it is something that is worthy of our time and our study. We hope that this episode will encourage you to do some research into the cultural norms and customs of the book of the Bible that you are studying. We know that this will give you a better grasp on what God’s Word says, and once you know what it says, you can apply it to your life. Episode 143: The Real Jesus: Humanity
31/12/2020 Duración: 36minJesus was God, but He was also a human being. So often we focus on the divinity of Jesus that we forget about his humanity. In this week’s episode, we look at some of the assets of Jesus’ humanity and the implications that it has on how humble He was and how sacrificial He is for all eternity. We will also discuss whether Jesus was able to sin or if He ever made any mistakes as a human being. We hope that you will be encouraged through this look at the theology of Christ and that your adoration for Jesus would grow as a result. Episode 142: Real Jesus: Virgin Birth
23/12/2020 Duración: 51minWhy is the virgin birth of Jesus even necessary? Is it just folklore, or does it fit within Christian theology? In this week’s episode, we take a look at the way human souls come into existence and discuss how Jesus became a human being. What we believe about the creation of the soul has a huge impact on sin and how it is transmitted to our species from Adam. It was necessary that Jesus did not come from the lineage of Adam, because if He did, He would have been infected with sin, just like the rest of us. Jesus's virgin birth enabled Him to be born sinless, and thus qualified to redeem us by being the perfect man who gave Himself as a sacrifice. We hope this will encourage you to think deeply about who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish. Episode 141: Counterfeit Jesus: Jehovah’s Witnesses
17/12/2020 Duración: 43minThis week we look into the counterfeit Jesus of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Was Jesus merely a created being sent by Jehovah as a ransom for mankind? Does Jehovah demonstrate love towards humanity in sending someone who is not God to die as a sacrifice? These are some of the questions we look into as we make a case from Scripture for why Jehovah’s Witness theology is wrong. What we believe about Jesus is important, and there are many counterfeit Jesus myths vying for our allegiance. We hope that this episode will help you to understand JW theology, understand Christian theology, and know why we believe Jesus is God, and that it was necessary for Him to be so, in order to redeem us. This time of year we have a great opportunity to talk with our friends and family about Jesus and who He really is. Episode 140: Counterfeit Jesus: Atheism/Agnosticism
10/12/2020 Duración: 01h01minContinuing our series Counterfeit Jesus, this episode looks into the claims of atheists and agnostics in regard to who the historical Jesus actually was. Some claim that Jesus never even existed. However, many atheists and agnostics admit that Jesus existed, but they claim that he is not who the New Testament claims he is. As Christians, we need to be able to answer the arguments that suggest Jesus is not God, and that he did not rise from the dead. Is the deity and resurrection of Jesus a legendary account that developed over a period of time? Was Jesus lying? Was Jesus crazy? Were the writers of the New Testament lying? Were they crazy? These questions need to be answered with good evidence and reason. As we seek to defend the claims of Christianity, we need to be prepared for every counterfeit Jesus that is suggested by other religions, worldviews, and cults. 03/12/2020 Duración: 33minThe culture provides a lot of false ideas out there about who the true Jesus is. This episode is the beginning of a new series where we will be focusing on the "Counterfeit Jesus" that is found in cults and religions that differ from what scripture says. Take a listen to this week’s episode as Tyler Hurley investigates doctrine in the LDS Church regarding their counterfeit view of who Jesus is from the virgin birth, his divinity, and the Trinity. Episode 138: Christians, Stop Freaking Out!
26/11/2020 Duración: 42minThis year has been filled with anxiety, stress, angst, unrest, and worry. Circumstances have been hard, which has made a huge impact on the mental and emotional health of many of us. However, are there behaviors that we indulge in which contribute to the anxiety and stress we are feeling? What we fill our minds with has a huge impact on us. Sadly, many have been filling their minds with information about the pandemic, the election, and other tumultuous events in our culture. Often this leads to obsessions over what’s happening, what the truth is, and why your perspective must be the correct one. As followers of Christ, we should, instead, be looking to His example on how to deal with a chaotic culture and what kept Him anchored to the truth. Jesus lived in a time of unrest, political corruption, and racial tension, yet he didn’t let worry overwhelm Him. We have a lot to learn from our Master. That is why we want you to hear the three principles about being effective cultural revolutionaries in this week’s episode. We will look at Scripture, and also Christians from the past who have successfully made an impact on their culture. From these sources, we will put together a game plan for effective change. We hope that this will give you some practical tips for reaching your friends, and community with the message of Jesus Christ. Episode 136: Bible Reading In Context
12/11/2020 Duración: 54minReading the Bible in context is very important for understanding what it is saying. We need to ask questions about the text, such as: Who wrote this? Who is this written to? What is the situation that prompted the writing of the book? What are the themes? Are there repeated words or phrases? By finding answers to these questions, we can understand the context. If we do not understand what the Bible is saying, then interpreting it correctly and applying it to our lives will have mixed results, if not disastrous results. This episode gives practical tips for reading the Bible in context. We hope that this will encourage you and inspire you to do more Bible study and dig into what the Scriptures say.
