Shepherds work with a flock of sheep, but this psalm reflects on our God having a personal relationship with each and every one of us - He shepherds us each individually and personally. He also points out that a sheep cannot survive without the shepherd's guidance and assistance - and it is the same with us - we do not survive well without God's shepherding of us. David pours out his heart to God where he is in turmoil and fear due to his actions that deserve discipline. However by the end of the psalm David knows that God has heard his prayer. The psalm does not tell us if David's concerns have been remedied, but it does tell us that David is at peace with his emotions and with God. Unfortunately, many churches in the past have taught people not to bear their true emotions to God in prayer. Yet that is exactly what David does in this psalm as he reflects on his problems and where he sees the only one who can save him from this danger is God himself. Josh teaches us to be honest with God - after all, he knows what we're feeling anyway so it's easier to be truthful and honest about our emotions and struggles.
