  • FB# 234 – Mike Maric

    29/10/2017 Duración: 01h07min

Today I have Mike Maric on the show. Mike is a medically trained forensic scientist that loves freediving and he believes that the quality of a person's life depends on the quality of their breathing. On his website, he says “when you master your breathing, you'll master your body, your mind, your life “ - I believe there is a lot of truth in that statement. We are always looking for ways to improve performance, yet we typically overlook the simple but not easy ones. Sleep and breathing are two of those.  IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Why breathing is the ultimate cross-training tool. Breathing and life Co2 training and why it helps with dealing with open water swimming. And why triathletes should learn and do flip turns in a pool and why Co2 tolerance is harder developing out of the pool Repetition is needed. Becoming the master of your breathing. The science All life is in the breathing Making our muscles work better without oxygen Where Mike’s mind is when he is about to do a big freedive Reducing rec

  • FB#233 - Scott Jones - Kona 2017

    14/10/2017 Duración: 55min

The clock is doing its thing ticking down to the start of the 2017 Ironman World Championships. The vibe is electric and you can feel the nerves mounting. Today I have my brother from another mother Scott Jones on the podcast. You can find an interview I did with Joneser on the Triathlon World Summit at FB160 this episode is often quoted as a favourite. Joneser is a winner in life… this guy packs more into life than most with more responsibilities in life than most (he’s a rear admiral of the US Navy and a commercial pilot, loving husband, father and kick ass athlete). We talk about Kona and how to race well out here and we also cover the ageing athlete. Joneser always comes out with nuggets of pure gold. Listen with your ears peeled back. Enjoy. • FB#231 - Greg Welch - Kona 2017

    11/10/2017 Duración: 22min

Today I’m speaking with the plucky Aussie Greg Welch. Better known as Welchy. he really doesn’t need an introduction but for those, who for some reason do not know who Welchy is… he is the charismatic Aussie and the first Aussie to win here in Kona back in 1994. I got the pleasure of sitting down at the Oakley house here in Kona with Greg and having a very quick conversation before the party started. There’s a bit of background noise but honestly who cares. We are in Kona sitting by the ocean chewing the fat about the race. Good times. And if you are here in Kona, go check out Oakley’s new helmets and glasses. They are pretty sweet. Enjoy. • FB#229 - Karlyn Pipes - Kona 2017

    08/10/2017 Duración: 01h15s

Today we kick off the Kona special with Kona local and swim legend Karlyn Pipes. I’ve had Karlyn on the podcast back in episode 140. Karlyn is a swimmer, swim technique coach, author and inspirational speaker. She has established more number one rankings than any other Masters-level swimmer in history and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015. Do yourself a favour and get her book The Do Over - an inspiring story of her do-over from early swim success to addiction and then recovery through swimming. This year she has been on a tear in masters swimming and I got lucky enough to have a swim session with her in her endless pool yesterday which had me focused and playing around in the water in today's Ho’ala Ironman Worlds Champs training swim. Her swim lessons also come packaged with metaphors for life. My conversation with Karlyn will help you become a better swimmer. And if you happen to be on the Big Island reach out to Karlyn via her contact page at Karlynpipes.com. You won’t regr

  • FB#228 - Denis Mikhailov

    29/09/2017 Duración: 02h06s

Ok, today I have Denis Mikhailov on the show. Denis is not a triathlete but he definitely IS an athlete and his big wall climbing adventures definitely fall into the endurance category and he has much to share. 8-14 odd hours out in the elements, working out the puzzle of performance to get to the ultimate destination. That puzzle includes the fitness and strength required to get the job done, not to mention fuelling and Denis’s path led him to create nomad nutrition and of course that mental fitness is so key. All of which we discuss on the show. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Deconstructing performance Why structure is so important Your next performance breakthrough comes down to your mental training When you have to get out there Zen Archery The process of coming back mentally from a scary fall Food equals health Why he went raw vegan and the day he gave it up The morning ritual The need to create great adventure food His book recommendation that is not a book. • FB #227 - Jesse Kropelnicki

    25/09/2017 Duración: 01h19min

Today’s guest is coach Jesse Kropelnicki who is the coach of two past professional athletes guests - Angela Naeth and Linsey Corbin. What I like about Jesse and why he has had so much success is that it’s not just about the training. When things go pear-shaped most peoples knee-jerk reaction is “it must have been the training” - when most of the time it’s simply some other limiter that is getting in the way of being able to leverage the training. These limiters are typically daily nutrition, or race fuelling, race execution or simply the athlete's mental fitness is not there. We get into the nitty-gritty in this conversation and as usual, there are great lessons that can help you in your quest to be a better athlete. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Managing your mental space for high performance Why context in any situation matters There is no balance The strategy to fixing your limiters The foundations of performance Unorthodox training methods Setting up your environment for success in training, business a

  • FB#226 - Angela Naeth

    15/09/2017 Duración: 01h35min

Today's podcast is my conversation with pro triathlete, Angela Naeth. And let me tell you, we get deep and Angela really lets it all out there. This makes it so special - we all have ups and downs and the best of life’s hurdles to overcome. Angela shows her vulnerability but it also shows that that is the true path and the reason why we should truly be ourselves. Angela grew up here in beautiful British Columbia, Canada and is known in the tri world for her powerhouse of a bike. She is a multiple 70.3 Champion, twenty-five 70.3 podium finisher, Ironman 2014 Chattanooga Champion (her third Ironman) and the 2015 North American Ironman Champion and had gone sub 9 twice. Angela has a Masters degree in Physical Therapy and Bachelors in Health Sciences… and in her quest to give back she has created this great women's triathlon/cycling community iracelikeagirl.com which gives her the opportunity to support others in the sport of triathlon.  I really enjoyed this conversation with Angela and I think you will too… IN

Today’s Fat Black is Charlotte and I being the chainsaw and cutting through the BS when it comes to Fat Adaptation. We keep seeing the mistakes because like most things, simplicity has been replaced with noise and "shoulds". What's needed is simplicity and patience.  IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Does it make sense to go lower carb and higher fat? • FB#222 - David Roche

    06/08/2017 Duración: 01h31min

Today I have a conversation with my ultra running coach, David Roche. David is not only a great runner - he’s the 2016 Way Too Cool 50k winner, the 2012 and 2014 USA Trail 10k National Champion, the 2014 US Sub-Ultra Trail Runner of the Year, a member of the 2014 US Mountain Running Team, the 2015 US Long Distance Mountain Team, and the 2017 US Trail World Champs team.  David is also great coach, with a strong community and has athletes crushing it over various distances every weekend. (Like Cat Bradley who was one of the 2.5% of people that got a ticket to Western States in the lottery and went on to WIN)  But as the title of his blog spot is… Some Work, ALL Play lays down his life philosophy of having fun. Yes it’s the trials of miles for success but love of the process and understanding that We are stardust with delusions of grandeur. And None of this stuff matters except the memories we make. So DECIDE to MAKE good memories no matter what. There’s a lot to learn in that view point and also loads to learn

  • FB #219 - The Bighorn 100

    30/06/2017 Duración: 01h56min

This week the tables are turned and I'm getting interviewed by non other than my awesome wife, Charlotte Paul. It's more a conversation about my experience of my first 100 mile run race through the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. Today's podcast is a long one... but you know what, the race was kinda long.  As per usual, lots of lessons for all of us and I know how much it helps to go over and debrief a race. Because we can always find areas to improve upon. For me, this race was everything and more than I could have hoped for or imagined.  The day before the race, there was this shop (unfortunately closed) across from the Blacktooth brewery where race registration was and it had this sign - "Today is a good day for a good day" -  it made me smile and I woke up with that in my head on race morning. Positivity IS a performance enhancer :) Ok, Lets do this. Enjoy. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Why the hell run a 100 miler?  Commitment to the goal The training and getting it done, no matter the weather My 3 go

  • FB #218 - Teresa Rider

    24/06/2017 Duración: 01h15min

This week I have the first person I ever spoke to in the sport of Triathlon. Teresa Rider was the then partner of John Hill (our first coach) and was a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Teresa proves that you’re never too old to start and etch away at blowing the doors off of what’s possible. She started at 33 years young. With NO swim background Teresa breastroked her way through her first Triathlon swim. She went on to Ironman and did Kona 12 times with 9 podiums, two of those being an age group World Champion. Teresa is married to Scott Jones a man I have so much respect for and someone that is like a brother too me. He was part of the Triathlon World Summit and you can listen to his fantastic interview here [FB#160] this is one power couple that is for sure. I’m stoked to have been part of this amazing woman's journey and she played a massive part in both Charlotte’s and mine for which I have so much gratitude for. Enjoy this and listen with both ears. A lot of wisdom and knowledge from Teresa. Over 2

  • FB# 217 - Musings from the road

    14/06/2017 Duración: 20min

Well… there have been no podcasts due to the simple fact of moving back to Whistler and all the craziness around that and then moving in and getting everything done before this trip to Bighorn 100 for my 100 miler. Honestly I just ran out of time to edit one from Teresa Rider and another from Chris Kelly. They will be out on our return along with a special episode (I’ll keep under wraps) and then once the results are in, a follow up with InsideTracker on my post 100miler bloods. Ok… so today is just a quick one from musings on the road and a lesson to me and that can help you out Lets do this.   Enjoy. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: Why we need to create urgency for important but not urgent tasks and how it helps your goals including race goals. • FB #216 - InsideTracker - A look into my bloods!

    27/05/2017 Duración: 01h53min

Today I speak with Mariah and Laura ( I mean Sassy) from Inside Tracker about their blood testing but all about my bloods from my pin prick in time- InsideTracker has become well-known among athletes for its ‘never-ending scientific discoveries and relentless pursuit of the health movement’. Its vision is to extend the quality and duration of human life and performance by… ‘empowering individuals with information they need to manage and optimize their own health – by providing a dynamic, personalized analytic platform at the intersection of biochemistry and technology, then distilling the results into simple, natural, and sustainable paths for people to follow’. But what does that mean in English?  1. InsideTracker uses your blood  2. Takes the key biomarkers found in your blood to determine your course of action for any goal 3. No more guessing - your blood - your body - your tailored results.  And as their hashtags states. #BloodDontLie  Lets do this.  Enjoy. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: We go deep into
