Rabies is a viral disease that is spread to humans by the saliva of an infected animal. The virus infects the nervous system, progresses to the brain and then causes death. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms are apparent. One to three people die in the U.S. every year from rabies. Worldwide, more than 55,000 people die every year from rabies. This occurs predominantly in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. In these countries rabid dogs are still a major problem and access to preventative treatment may be difficult to obtain. For humans, it can be prevented almost 100% when post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered soon after the exposure has occurred. Allergic rhinitis, Allergy symptoms, affects about 17% of North Americans. Over the last 30 years there has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of allergic rhinitis. People with allergic rhinitis are more likely to develop asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, headache, ear infections, and have chronic fatigue. Chickenpox or varicella is a viral infection that traditionally affects young children causing red itchy blisters to break out all over the body. The virus is extremely contagious. Prior to the availability of a vaccine there were approximately four million cases in the US every year which resulted in roughly 10,000 hospitalizations and over 100 deaths. The varicella vaccine was licensed in the US in the mid nineties and since then number of infections has plummeted. Multiple Sclerosis, or “MS”, is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, or brain and spinal cord. This week I'd like to bring attention to a frequently overlooked disease called pertussis. Often called “whooping cough,” the disease sounds like a varient of the common cold, more of an inconvenience than anything else. This is generally the case for adults; however, for young children and infants it can be severe and life threatening. While pertussis is a vaccine-preventable disease, since the early 1980s there has been a dramatic increase in the number of cases. In recent years West Nile virus has received a lot of media attention. The virus, which is spread via mosquito, was first isolated in Uganda in 1937. Through the years there have been outbreaks in most parts of the world including Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Probiotics are living microorganisms, which are beneficial to a person when taken in adequate amounts. Most benefits are related to gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, like antibiotic associated diarrhea, infectious diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome.
